Hello Witches!

Who’s in for some Mugwort Foraging just before the Equinox? Mugwort is a favourite of Witches, considered a plant to induce lucid dreaming and psychic visions and a direct gift from the goddess Artemis, hence its Latin name Artemisia Vulgaris. As it is a Lunar plant ruled by the Moon we’re going to gather it on a Monday (day of the Moon) while the Moon is in her own sign of Cancer (meaning she’s super happy). The early afternoon time is also to catch the planetary hour of the Moon which is going to be between 14:15 and 15:23 on that day (don’t worry if you’re not familiar with those terms, Ysha @activist.witch will happily talk your ear off if you’d like to learn more about it). Suffice to say: it’s going to be a great magical time to harvest mugwort! We will talk about how to dry and store the leaves but note: we do not advise mugwort consumption!

Witch Bottles: A Past-Informed Practical.

Witch Bottles are ritual containers full to the brim with magical history, cunning correspondences, and present-day potential for the magical practitioner. Join Lee to discover key cunning folk case studies, understand the elements of a traditional Witch Bottle, and create a custom concoction from the materia magica provided. At the end of the workshop you’ll leave with your very own witch bottle and, for the purists, a funnel!

Lee Ignire is a Witch whose practice varies from excessive research to winging it. Their dissertation on container magic (past and present) has led to an unhealthy obsession with ritual magic that, quite literally, takes the piss. Continuing to straddle the broom of occultism and academia, they advocate accessible theory and practice, encouraging everyone to Do The Magical Thing via YouTube, talks, and workshops. Magical folks in Cymru and beyond, check out some of the amazing works they have at the Arts and Social Studies Library! (ASSL) This space isn't just for students, it's your library too and the floor holding Welsh Witchcraft books, including ones in Cymraeg, are at risk from plans to change the purpose of this space. The ASSL is perfect for coven-meets where you can access hard to find tomes or several copies at once so you can find magical insights together. Flying your broom solo? This workshop is kind of a dream come true. In fighting environmental apathy, we're going to explore a bit of animism, and how building relationships with various denizens, whether blades of grass, rocks, the air, or even your walls is an act of care and reciprocity that makes the world more magical. This is the first time I am giving an in-person CTWC Brew! It is part of the programming for the art show I helped put together, called Through This Fire.

This is one practical step we can all take, getting to know our environment, for free (!!) that can help us reconnect to our ecosystem, and each other in our daily actions. Inspired by adrienne marie brown's emergent strategy, these intentional connections ripple up and out through our society.

Lee of Do The Magical Thing and fellow co-organizer of CTWC will give a talk on the animism bit (they are a witch historian!) and I will share resources for connecting with our local environment. Following, we will go to the park across the street to make those connection and make art about it!

Lunch break with these cheeky chirpers! Flipping love Jackdaws. Also rocking up today: my favourite local pigeon Pinky, who waits to be fed and if not you're not quick enough has been known to peer in the doorway indignantly, our nesting Magpies who have returned again this year, and the local gigantic Crow who will caw loudly if you haven't noticed them but is otherwise shy. by @dothemagicalthing
