“They say people change their cell structure every seven years, so I’ve totally regenerated several times since we started Pylon forty years ago,” says Vanessa Briscoe Hay, frontwoman for that iconic Athens band and now frontwoman for Pylon Reenactment Society. “Over the course of your life, you’re going to learn new things. Your mind is going to change and expand. I’m a lot older now, and I can’t be something I’m not anymore. Pylon is our guiding star, but we’re not Pylon. We’re Pylon Reenactment Society.”

It's easier to explain what Pylon Reenactment Society isn’t than what it actually is. It’s not a continuation or a reunion, because Vanessa is the only member in both groups. It’s neither a tribute act nor a cover band, although they do perform Pylon songs. Instead, this new band draws inspiration from that old band, taps into its motivating principles.

Pylon Reenactment Society’s Magnet Factory organically grew out of jams and writing sessions over several years. As the album took shape, the lyrics peeled away at the layers of time and shared spaces that make up a life. A pair of unrecorded songs by Pylon were brought in to round out this collective unspoken theme. All the music was recorded by the current four members of the band (Vanessa Briscoe Hay, Jason NeSmith, Kay Stanton, Gregory Sanders) with a stellar vocal duet with the incomparable Kate Pierson of The B-52’s.

From the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette 4/4/25 📰

“Dot dot dot,” the wonderfully fun debut LP from Little Rock post-punk queens DOT, hits your favorite streaming service today, and the ebullient trio will celebrate with a show Saturday at White Water Tavern.

The 11-song, and brilliantly named, “dot dot dot” is the follow-up to the trio’s 2020 EP “Welcome to the DOTosphere” and was recorded with engineer/producer Jordan Trotter in Heber Springs and Little Rock, with a few tracks recorded in the North Little Rock living room of singer-songwriter Adam Faucett.

The album features DOT originals along with a cover of the B-52s’ “Dirty Back Road.” Other songs include the jangly “Crush;” “Eagles Appear,” about going on float trips on the Caddo River; “Blood Moon,” about a lunar event so moving you have to take a day off work and “Casual,” which has a lilting, melancholy, ‘60s girl-group vibe.

A video for “dot dot dot’s” first track, “Take You Out,” was directed by Molly Wheat.

While most bands have a drummer, guitarist, bassist, singer, etc., the women of DOT trade off on instruments and vocal duties, not just during the songwriting process but during performances as well.

“Not only do we all write songs, we all play multiple instruments,” Spero says. “To me, that’s part of why our songs have a diversity in their sound. They all come about really differently.”

“When we write our set lists we really have to think about the order because we’re rotating (on instruments),” Wolf says.

DOT will be joined for Saturday’s record release show by Sleepy Zuhowski and Stressor. DOT will go onstage second, Spero says, and will perform the new album in its entirety along with a few covers.

Since 2017 the women of DOT have conducted the Trust Tree summer camp to provide opportunities for young girls to “uplift girls in Central Arkansas through music and art.” For more information visit trusttree.org.
