The upper Similkameen Valley’s very first ski hill was established on the 160-acre Eastgate property by the entrepreneurial Tower family, who purchased the land for $2,000 in 1943. Anticipating the region’s winter sports boom long before the provincial government took action, the Tower boys manually hand-cleared the timber on a steep slope located directly across the river from their family ranch and cabins. To accommodate visiting winter sports enthusiasts from the Fraser Valley and the BC coast, the family engineered their own makeshift infrastructure, installing a rudimentary, engine-powered rope tow to pull skiers up the newly cleared hillside. Showing a serious commitment to the venture, one of the sons, Les Tower, traveled east to take a professional ski-instructor course and returned as the region’s first certified instructor to provide structured lessons. A typical winter weekend at the hill became a highly popular, community-wide affair where tourists would spend Sundays skiing, tobogganing, sleigh riding, and horseback riding, all before packing into the 43-seat Towers Cafe for massive, home-cooked turkey suppers, socializing, and singing into the small hours of the morning. Despite its early success, the independent family ski hill met its match and ultimately succumbed to competition after the BC Government opened its own heavily funded ski operations nearby within the official boundaries of Manning Provincial Park in 1954. By 1960, the park upgraded to a more advanced Poma lift that the Towers could not financially compete with, and the historic run of the region’s first ski hill came to a permanent end when a tragic fire leveled the Towers Cafe in 1964.#similkameenvalley #manningpark #history #ski #britishcolumbia by @double_dogg_660

Half way through the summer, I had a BC conservation officer randomly show up to my house . The person said they were looking for me for a week 🤦 I’m happy I just got a warning but am suprised nobody else seems to get in trouble for the content they post . I wasn’t dumping garbage , or doing anything illegal in my mind. Atleast nothing to warrant having a CO show up on a Saturday. Anybody else have RCMP or Conservation show up for content being posted ? #becareful #takechances #contentcreater #engagement #britishcolumbia by @double_dogg_660

The Coquihalla Highway toll booths operated for 22 years between May 16, 1986—opened alongside Phase 1 of Highway 5 to manage Expo 86 traffic—and their sudden removal at 1:00 PM on September 26, 2008, following a surprise announcement by Premier Gordon Campbell. Located at a high-altitude mountain summit 13 kilometres north of the Great Bear Snowshed and 60.7 km south of Merritt, the 13-lane canopy facility required 17 permanent auxiliary workers to handle traffic through extreme sub-zero blizzards. Flat rates were set at $5 for motorcycles, $10 for cars and motorhomes, and up to $50 for commercial transport trucks based on axles, while bicycles and emergency vehicles were exempt; during holiday gridlocks, unmonitored “honour system” change baskets were opened to speed up queues. Over its lifetime, the toll plaza processed over 29 million vehicles by 2000 and generated $845 million in total cash revenue, triggering heavy political controversy since the funds entered the province’s general revenue pool rather than directly clearing the highway’s $848 million localized debt ($955 million for all three phases). Public anger intensified when the government spent $100,000 on roof upgrades just six months before the shutdown, after which the displaced collectors were reallocated to other government jobs and the booths were demolished. Today, the location serves as the Britton Creek Rest Area / Coquihalla Lakes rest stop, where the original concrete washrooms remain and locals still refer to the site as “the old toll booth” when monitoring mountain weather. #coquihalla #highway #toll #britishcolumbia #history by @double_dogg_660

Operating from 1968 to 1998 at the corner of Highway 97N and McCurdy Road, Kelowna’s Flintstones Bedrock City was a beloved stone-age roadside theme park famously fronted by a rustic, giant log cabin gift shop and a towering 40-foot Fred Flintstone statue that lured travelers into a whimsical prehistoric village. Inside, families could explore spray-on concrete replicas of cartoon homes, ride in un-motorized stone cars, see a playful “Mount Rockmore” sculpture, and eat “Bronto Burgers” before splashing at the adjacent Wild Waters waterslide park on hot Okanagan summer days. However, the 1990s brought intense financial strain when studio owner changes and the 1994 live-action film release led to demands for expensive, Hollywood-standard aesthetic upgrades that independent roadside operators simply could not afford. This corporate friction ultimately forced the park’s permanent closure and demolition in 1998 to make way for the McCurdy Corner commercial plaza, though nostalgic locals still cherish the memory of the park, with many of its auctioned-off dinosaur slides and concrete character statues surviving today across various backyards and farms throughout the British Columbia interior. #kelowna #flinstones #history #britishcolumbia #bchistory by @double_dogg_660

The 1980 Great International World Championship Bathtub Race saw Dave Bonnici of Australia conquer the open waters of the Strait of Georgia, winning the grueling 58-kilometre trek from Nanaimo to Vancouver’s Kitsilano Beach with a remarkable time of 1 hour, 19 minutes, and 46 seconds. This specific era marked a major competitive shift as Australian racers dominated the event by introducing advanced, high-tech hull designs that easily outpaced the traditional, crude plywood watercraft built in backyard sheds. By 1980, the race rules had adapted to allow for slightly larger 7.5-horsepower outboard motors, forcing participants to strictly maximize marine efficiency to achieve high speeds on the unpredictable ocean. Championed by Nanaimo’s famous, pirate-costumed mayor Frank Ney, the unique spectacle grew into a massive global media sensation that even captured international television coverage in Japan. Though the perilous cross-strait route to Vancouver was permanently discontinued in 1996 due to safety concerns and festival cancellations, the historic tradition is kept alive today by the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society through a safer, localized loop that starts and finishes within Nanaimo Harbour. #nanaimo #georgiastraight #vancouver #boat #britishcolumbia by @double_dogg_660

The Prince George Sandblast was a wild, high-energy summer sand-skiing and racing competition held annually from 1971 to 2003 on the steep Nechako River cutbanks in Prince George, British Columbia. Initiated by Bob Nelmes, who won the inaugural dual-slalom ski race, the event exploded in popularity during the 1980s and 1990s, transforming into a massive local tradition that drew up to 5,000 spectators and even caught the attention of iconic ski filmmaker Warren Miller. Competitors braved the sheer, snowless sandy drop on downhill skis, snowboards, mountain bikes, and eventually highly unconventional, homemade contraptions. The festival featured competitive giant slalom runs alongside chaotic novelty races, turning it into a beloved but notoriously dangerous community party. The 32-year run came to a tragic and permanent end on August 16, 2003, when a brakeless, unsteerable couch mounted on bicycle wheels veered off course during a novelty furniture race and crashed into the crowd, severely injuring spectators and volunteers. This severe accident, coupled with a massive spike in liability insurance costs that soared from $1,700 to $8,000, ultimately forced organizers to cancel the event forever. #princegeorgebc #goodolddays #history #britishcolumbia #fun by @double_dogg_660

The Langley Cobra Fatality occurred on July 30, 1992, when 45-year-old exotic reptile handler Larry Moor was killed by his pet Egyptian cobra in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Moor, a resident of nearby Langley, was the founder of the B.C. Association of Reptile Owners and had dedicated much of his life to educating the public and dispelling negative stereotypes about snakes. While tending to his collection, the highly venomous snake bit him, prompting Moor to run outside to desperately signal bystanders for help. However, the cobra’s potent neurotoxic venom acted so rapidly that he collapsed and died on the sidewalk before medical help could arrive. The tragedy deeply affected the local community, where Moor was well-known for his educational school presentations, and it triggered fierce public debates regarding the safety and regulation of keeping dangerous, exotic predators in residential neighborhoods. #langley #mapleridge #cobra #history #britishcolumbia by @double_dogg_660

Today is the day I turn 41. There’s so many ways to look at this day. Instead of looking at it like downhill from here, I feel like I’m at the peak of opportunity in my life. The Stave Lake Correctional Centre was established in 1971 as a low-security wilderness work camp, born from a partnership between BC Corrections, BC Hydro, and the provincial Forest Ministry. Initially directed by Lloyd Hopper, the three-month program was designed for young adult offenders serving their first jail sentences, providing them with essential outdoor work conditioning, first aid, and survival skills. The crews tackled the massive physical task of clearing thousands of acres of hazardous legacy tree stumps and debris exposed when BC Hydro lowered Stave Lake. By 1988, the facility shifted its entire mandate to become a specialized, dedicated treatment and residential center for sex offenders. It operated under this model until 2002, when it was permanently closed down during a broader restructuring of the provincial Corrections Branch. Following its closure, the site was completely transformed into the Zajac Ranch, a nature-based summer camp that continues to serve disabled and terminally ill children today. #missionbc #stavelake #history #zajacranch #britishcolumbia by @double_dogg_660
