Congratulations to Central High School Class of 2028 standout Cassidee Simpson on an outstanding performance at the AAU National Championships! She placed 6th in the nation in the 16U Girls Discus event. Competing against some of the best young throwers in the country, she proved she belongs among the nation’s elite. 🏀 DOUBLE COVERAGE THROWBACK 🏀

The first Muscogee County public school to win a GHSA girls basketball state championship Kendrick Cherokees 32-0!!

Before they became state champions, the Kendrick Lady Cherokees experienced years of heartbreak. This legendary senior class finished their careers with an incredible 116-5 overall record, including the postseason.

They won four consecutive region championships, four straight William Henry Shaw Christmas Tournament titles, reached three consecutive Final Fours, and played for the 2005 Class AAA State Championship, falling just short.

Entering their senior season, there was only one goal left—to bring home a state championship. Led by Janae McKinney, Mukia Myrick, Ashley Barley, Lacee Hollis, Kym Stamps, and Keondra Barnes, and coached by Sterling Hicks, the Lady Cherokees completed a perfect 32-0 season, defeating Carrollton 79-67 to capture the 2008 GHSA Class AAA State Championship—the first girls basketball state title in Kendrick history.

After 116 career wins, years of dominance, and a few heartbreaking losses, this senior class finished the job and cemented its place as one of the greatest teams in Columbus basketball history. by @doublecoverage_sports

⛳ DOUBLE COVERAGE SPOTLIGHT ⛳

Another championship is coming back to the Chattahoochee Valley! Congratulations to Brooks Urquhart, a Columbus High School Blue Devil (Class of 2027), on capturing the 61st Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) Junior Championship Green Island Country Club

Urquhart fired rounds of 65-69-68 (-14) to win the prestigious tournament by four strokes, defeating one of the strongest fields of junior golfers in the state.

The victory adds to an already impressive résumé. Brooks helped lead Columbus High to the 2025 GHSA Class 2A Team State Championship, claimed the individual state title, and is now adding a Georgia Junior Championship to his list of accomplishments. by @doublecoverage_sports

All day long, Double Coverage is winding the clock back with some of the greatest moments, memories, players, and teams from around the Chattahoochee Valley!

Before social media, Hudl, and highlight reels… earning All-Bi-City meant you had put together one of the best seasons in the Chattahoochee Valley. Today we start our 2001 All-Bi-City Defense spotlight with featured:

Anthony Merritt (Shaw) – A two-time All-Bi-City Defensive Player of the Year, Merritt continued his career at the University of North Alabama, where he finished with 19 school records, seven Gulf South Conference records, and four NCAA Division II records before signing professionally and playing for the Columbus Lions.

Damian “Nighthawk” Daniels (Shaw) – After starring at West Georgia, Daniels became a legend with the Columbus Lions, helping lead the franchise to its first championship while earning Defensive Player of the Year honors four times. His impact was so great that the Lions retired his jersey and inducted him into the Columbus Lions Ring of Fame.

Philip Wheeler (Shaw) – One of the greatest linebackers to come through the Valley, Wheeler starred at Georgia Tech before being selected in the 3rd round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He went on to play nine NFL seasons with the Colts, Raiders, Dolphins, Falcons, 49ers, and Cardinals, recording more than 550 career tackles. by @doublecoverage_sports

Spencer High School’s Pershin Williams was the leading scorer in the Columbus area, averaging 22.7 points per game while helping lead the Greenwave to one of the area’s top seasons. But take a look at the names that filled the stat leaders 26 years ago!!

LEVEL 11 MAGAZINE COUNTDOWN CONTINUES!

The countdown to kickoff rolls on as we continue previewing some of the top football programs across the Tri-City and surrounding region.

Today’s spotlight shines on the Central Red Devils, who finished 11-2, captured the AHSAA Class 7A Region Championship, and came just one point away from playing for a state title. After a heartbreaking 35-34 semifinal loss to eventual state champion Thompson, Central enters 2026 with one of the area’s most talented rosters.

Now, a new era begins under Head Coach Cody Flournoy, who arrives after leading Jackson High School to back-to-back Alabama Class 4A state championships. With stars like Bobby Coleman, Jayshaun Woodhouse, Braylen Averett, Mike Bass, and transfer Zion Mabry returning, expectations remain sky-high in Phenix City.
