Where to begin? This is emotional for me. I am grateful, excited and humbled to announce that my image was selected from over 8,500 entries as the Fisher Prize Winner of the 2024 Audubon Society Photo Contest!!! I would like to thank the judges and congratulate all of the other contest winners. I can’t thank those who believed in me, and pushed me forward in pursuing photography as a career….you all have made this possible!!! Sincerest thanks to the Florida State Parks, and their Employees who maintain these areas so that wildlife continue to flourish in their natural habitat, giving all wildlife enthusiasts places to enjoy watching, studying and capturing their images of wildlife throughout this great state of Florida.

The Fisher Prize honors the legacy of Audubon’s longtime creative director Kevin Fisher. It recognizes the most creative approach in photographing birds—for example, highlighting an unexpected point of view—blended with technical expertise and an original composition. The Fisher prize pushes the traditional canons of bird photography to daring new heights, while never compromising strict ethical guidelines. Like the Grand Prize, it can be awarded to an image submitted to any of the four photography divisions.

Story about the image:

On this day, while visiting my favorite park, A.L. Anderson Park on Lake Tarpon in Tarpon Springs, FL. I was observing the behavior of a pair of Common Gallinule’s as they searched for food to eat on the lake. As I watched these birds, I observed one of the birds diving underwater to grab some food. I hadn’t really seen this behavior before from these birds. Sunset was nearing so I positioned myself so that the bird would be backlit. I wanted to capture the highlighting of the water droplets, as the bird dove underwater. Underexposing the image, I was able to capture this image.

Those eyes.

I’ve photographed a lot of wildlife, but having a young bobcat this close and watching its curiosity was something special.

One minute it was cautiously watching me from beneath a fallen tree, the next it was exploring, climbing, looking up at everything around it….and occasionally giving me a look that made me wonder exactly who was studying whom.

It’s encounters like this that remind me why I love wildlife photography. You never really know what you’re going to get. You just put yourself in the right place, stay patient, and hope you’re ready when something special happens.

Swipe through for a few of my favorites from this little bobcat’s adventure at Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife.
