Piccolos & Sousa on the 4th of July: the Pumpkin Spice Latte of the orchestra. One day a year, aggressively. See you next year, Yankee Doodle. 🇺🇸 by @dougdeflute

I truly could not be more excited to join the Yamaha Artist roster!

My Yamaha flute has completely changed my relationship with the instrument. It’s resonant and deep, sweet and vocal, remarkably even, and has the most accurate scale of any flute I’ve played. It’s a dream come true to make music with my instrument instead of fighting it.

What makes this partnership especially meaningful is Yamaha’s commitment to students and music education. As both an educator and performer, I’m so proud to be part of a global company whose commitment to investing in musicians at every stage of their journey is unparalleled.

I’m also thrilled to join friends, colleagues, and mentors I admire, including Chelsea Knox, Olivia Staton, Alex Lombo, Sonora Slocum, Jeffrey Khaner, and more.

Excited for what’s ahead!

[PART 1/3]

Flutist Doug DeVries @dougdeflute chats about some of the background of this season’s finale concerts, Roots & Reunion!

Learn about how MCP became connected to bassoonist and composer Marsha Schweitzer in our early days, when we first performed the now beloved “Neighborhood Nutcracker”, which features Schweitzer’s arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s ballet.

Years later, we are ecstatic to be presenting more of her arrangements at this weekend’s concerts of Mendelssohn and Schoenberg.

Happy New Year! Damn, 2025 was a lot: amazing, brutal, fun, exhausting, challenging, inspiring…and sometimes all at the same time. 😅 But it all ended better than I could’ve imagined and I’m so thankful!

I could go on and on and on about how grateful I am for all the friends who stayed steady while everything else moved around, but instead I’ll show you my favorite 100-some-odd photos. Y’all know who you are. ❤️

Year in numbers:
33 flights
17 cities
103 rehearsals
94 performances
$470 spent at Starbucks
158 workouts
17 books read…

Yay! Flute friends! Chelsea’s recital at the flute center was so good! Missing from the photo: @jessicaaurataskov #flute #flutecenterofnewyork by @dougdeflute

Summer was so special this year: concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, getting to meet the one and only Cynthia Erivo 🥰, performances with Sinfónica Minería in Vail, sneaking in a visit with my sister in San Francisco, and then three beautiful weeks in Honolulu with the Hawaii Symphony—hiking, biking, swimming, and practically living outside (yes I wore sunscreen, yes I got sunburned).

I also made it to my first NFA Convention in Atlanta, celebrated Sean & Rebecca’s wedding in Chicago, and topped it all off paddle boarding on Lake Washington with my parents in Seattle. Oh—and let’s not forget all the incredible wine along the way (cheers, Jen Hughes 🍷). Too many of you to tag, but I love you all! Where are we going next?!

Spring reel? ✔️ Summer reel? ✔️ Both posted in the same week? Clearly I’ve become a full-time influencer 😂 (but don’t worry, this won’t last… see you all in 2026). by @dougdeflute

We closed out the 2024–25 chamber season with flutist Douglas DeVries, pianist Yvonne Chen, and cellist David Dietz’s stunning performance of Mendelssohn’s d minor trio (yes, with flute… and yes, it’s better this way 😉). It was definitely one for the highlights of the year! There is so much more where this came from and we can’t wait to share it with you at any of our incredible concerts this season—come join us 🎶✨ by @dougdeflute

Spring recap… in September. 😎 At this rate, expect my summer reel by Christmas! 🎄 But who cares when Spring 2025 was this fun—birthday steak night & Sleeping Beauty at Houston Ballet in February, Mardi Gras mayhem with Mollie and Josiah in March, toasting my parents’ 60ths in Seattle & Father’s Day feasts in Houston in April and May, AND with performances and masterclasses in San Antonio throughout (that wild night out with Blake and Lena? Legendary)… Laughter, epic eats, and drinks galore—I promise we were working hard, too (sometimes)! Too many people to tag, you know I love you all. #latebloomer #latebutgreat by @dougdeflute

Throwback to a two-night Bach Festival earlier this year in San Antonio…

This is the opening solo from an aria in Bach’s Easter Oratorio, and I thought I’d share how I experimented with two different approaches in back-to-back performances.

On the first night, I played the way I’ve been playing for a while—headjoint pulled out, using lots of air for a more open, enveloping sound. It’s a bit more diffuse, more “pillowy,” and fills the space in a really comforting way.

On the second night, I tried the opposite: headjoint pushed in, sound more focused, less air required—but there’s more resonance and a purer core to the sound.

It’s a subtle shift, but it really changes the feel and the pitch. I’m still finding my way between the two styles. Would love to hear what y’all think—do you have a preference? Notice any differences?
