“Magic is sometimes very close to nothing at all,” an exhibition of works by Douglas Gordon (@douglasgordonart), is on view through Saturday, August 22, at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. On the gallery’s walls, ceiling, and floor—and spilling onto the building’s exterior and the street beyond—is a selection of Gordon’s text works, including such key early examples in vinyl as “Meaning and Location” (1990). This renders a biblical promise in two different versions in circular form, distinguishing them through the shift of a comma: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise” and “Truly, I say to you today, you will be with me in paradise.” “Magic” is centered on “Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait” (2006), a double-screen film produced in collaboration with Philippe Parreno. For a full 90 minutes in 2005, artists @douglasgordon and @philippeparreno kept seventeen cameras trained on @zidane, during a match between Real Madrid and Villarreal. Cut with ambient sound and a swelling score from @mogwaiband, the film serves as an urgent capsule of football history. SWIPE LEFT <<< Generation X at DESTE Foundation At the DESTE Foundation in Athens, curator Massimiliano Gioni brings together works by artists including Maurizio Cattelan, Matthew Barney, Doug Aitken, Douglas Gordon, Cheryl Donegan, Cameron Jamie, Urs Fischer, Elizabeth Peyton, and many others to examine the lasting influence of a generation that continues to shape contemporary art. Rather than looking back with nostalgia, the exhibition reveals how the questions these artists raised in the 1980s and 1990s remain strikingly relevant today. We were honoured to score “Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait" directed by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno. The two-channel video projection by Douglas Gordon (b. 1966, Glasgow, Scotland) and Philippe Parreno (b. 1964, Grenoble, France) follows the legendary French soccer star Zinédine Zidane in real time over the course of a single match played on April 23, 2005, at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. Assembled from footage shot by seventeen synchronised cameras placed around the stadium, the film captures Zidane from multiple angles and remains fixed on him even when the central action of the match shifts elsewhere. By splicing in footage from the live television broadcast, Gordon and Parreno challenge viewers’ perception of spectacle and modern celebrity. There are upcoming screens coming soon across the US: Guggenheim Museum, New York, June 11–July 19, 2026 Bass Museum of Art, Miami, May 20–July 19, 2026 Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami, Mar 19–Aug 28, 2026 Off The Wall 725, Atlanta, July 10, 2026, 9pm Gagosian Beverly Hills, July 16–Aug 28/29, 2026 More screenings coming soon.
