Here's a simple test for any part of your business:

If you disappeared for two weeks, would it still run?

Not limp along. Run.

If the answer is no, it isn't a strength yet. It's a dependency. And the dependency is you.

That's one of the grading rules in The EDGE Business Blueprint. Here's another: when you're torn between two grades, pick the lower one. Optimism is a great trait for a founder and a terrible one for a self-assessment.

126 questions. 16 areas. One honest look at what runs without you.

Just $9 at dougthorpe.com (link in bio).

Which part of your business would stall first if you stepped away?

Red. Yellow. Green.

That's the whole grading system in my new workbook, and it's simple on purpose.

Red = Needs Development. It's missing, it's broken, or it all lives in your head.
Yellow = OK for Now. It works, mostly. But it won't survive 30% growth or losing a key person.
Green = Strong Position. It's written down, measured, and owned by someone other than you.

Here's the thing: the goal isn't an all-green report card. Most healthy businesses have plenty of yellow. The goal is knowing exactly where your red lights are, so you fix the right things first.

The EDGE Business Blueprint walks you through all 16 areas of your business. Just $9 at dougthorpe.com (link in bio).

Where's the reddest light in your business right now?

Two-year plans gather dust. Henry Evans and I talk about why 90-day sprints help you outpace the competition. Keep the long-term direction, plan the work in 90-day chunks, then check in and adjust.

Henry Evans once told a friend he wasn't qualified for a big job. The friend said, "Henry, I decide who's qualified." When your own confidence runs low, it's okay to borrow someone else's for a while.

Most owners only look under the hood when something starts smoking.

By then, the repair bill is bigger than it needed to be.

You don't go to your annual physical because you feel sick. You go so the doctor can catch the small stuff before it turns into big stuff.

Your business deserves the same checkup.

That's why I built The EDGE Business Blueprint: Finding Your Hot Spots. It's a self-paced workbook with 126 plain-spoken questions across People, Process, Product, and Performance. You grade 16 areas, find your hot spots, and walk away with a simple 30/60/90-day plan.

About two hours and a cup of coffee. Just $9.

Get it at dougthorpe.com (link in bio).

When was the last time you gave your business a real checkup?

Henry Evans calls himself a recovering optimist. His advice: keep a pessimist on your planning team. Optimists see the destination. Pessimists see the potholes. You need both in the car.

Henry Evans went from a stuttering, bullied kid in Brooklyn to a millionaire by 30, then lost it all after 9/11. What came next is the part that stuck with me. Failing at something doesn't make you a failure.

Waiting for perfect information is a decision too. Colin Powell's 40-70 rule says once you have 40 to 70 percent of what you need, start moving and adjust as you go. Henry Evans and I talk about acting before it's too late.

In a crisis, your emotions always beat your thinking brain to the scene. Henry Evans calls it the Ferrari and the bicycle. Great crisis leaders notice the Ferrari, take a breath, and switch vehicles fast. Our full conversation on crisis leadership is out now.

Who should hold the answer: you, or the person you're paying?

That one question decides whether you need a coach or a consultant.

A consultant brings expertise and hands you a plan. Fast. Useful. And sometimes it ends up as a beautiful deck nobody uses.

A coach draws the answer out of you and holds you to it. Slower. But you built it, so it sticks when the pressure hits.

So here's the question worth sitting with: is the thing that needs to change your business... or the way you lead it?

If it's the second one, a better plan won't fix it.

The full guide, with a side-by-side comparison and a simple way to decide, is at the link in bio.

Prospectors didn't keep everything in the pan. They swirled it and let the water carry off the mud and gravel. The gold settled at the bottom.

Feedback works like that.

Some of what comes at you as a leader is emotion. Some is somebody's agenda. Some is just bad timing. Swirl it, let that wash out, and what stays behind is the thing worth keeping.

Three questions do the swirling:
What did they actually see or hear?
Does it show up more than once?
What's one lesson I can test?

And you need something to measure it against. Write down three beliefs about how you lead. That's your level.

What would be left in your pan this week?

The full post is at the link in bio.

I walked into Starbucks and ordered a banana NUT bread latte. They don't have one. They have a banana bread latte. One extra word and the barista and I were completely out of sync. Once upon a time, I'd have gotten agitated. This time I owned my mistake and laughed it off. Leaders make that choice every day: react or respond.
