There, a child sleeps

I created this mask around a year ago, a consoling way to ease the weight of the child I carry. An escape into mysticism, into a different world, a much much softer one

Without sunlight, the plant refuses to decay. A quiet reminder of what lives beneath the soil.

We tend to forget that transformation carries a lot of grief.

I’ve always been drawn to dragonflies, to their mysticism and their quiet symbolism. I see them as living fairies, symbols of metamorphosis, as they spend most of their lives underwater, going through different life stages before crawling out of the darkness to grow wings.

I had the opportunity to hold one, though I did find it upside down in a puddle of water. I carried it, dried its wings, and kept it inside. It lived for two days, slightly moving from one spot to another despite its wings being damaged. Yet on the third day, I noticed it grew weaker. I tried feeding it sugar water and keeping it warm, hoping it would get better so I could release it back to where it belonged, as I sensed a sort of guilt for keeping it inside.

Hours in, I watched it gradually die, silently, going from discreet breathing movements to complete stillness. I am aware it is merely a fragile insect, but I couldn’t help but feel this heaviness, as if I had failed to rescue my symbol of transformation, as if I were not worthy of transformation myself.

Then my state of being came to my notice. My need for control and this feeling of grief, anything but acceptance. Emotions I’ve been carrying for some time now. I linked it to the grieving of what once was, who we once were, and how we tend to forget that transformation carries a lot of grief. by @dovinoa

I came across a 1978 newspaper mentioning reports on P@lest!ne and all that its people were forced to endure. Separately, I stumbled upon a 1920s photograph of a P@lest!nian mother and her child, taken by Lebanese photographer Khalil Raad.

There’s something about this image that holds me. It feels like a mark in history, but also something deeply familiar. And perhaps unsurprisingly, the profound resemblance to portraits of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. No wonder.

“Mother’s bleedin’ in her heart
With a sleeping child within her arms
From the river to the sea
When will every child be free?”

PS: to preserve all the information stated in the newspaper, I made sure to photograph it before drawing on top of it
