The way they walk and the way they look at you.

I never thought I’d get to know what it feels like to see a polar bear walking towards you. The way they move is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I could spend my life, being, with them. taken in Churchill, Manitoba by @downdirtroads

Save this for the next time you’re gear shopping!

A few of the things that I always consider before buying a new piece of gear because overconsumption is out and I want to make sure it will last years and years 🙂‍↕️

And remember, safety, performance, durability and doing our best for the planet matters a lot more than looking cool. by @downdirtroads

After spending much of its life growing in the ocean, an adult Pacific salmon begins its journey back to the freshwater river or stream where it was born.

This journey can be extremely long and difficult, as the salmon must swim upstream against strong currents and sometimes travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres.

As salmon make their way upstream, their bodies begin to change. Their organs are slowly shutting down, and after spawning, they will die in or near the stream where they were born - if they were successful.

Salmon occupy a central position in the ecological networks of the Pacific Northwest, serving as a crucial link between marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Their annual migrations transport vast amounts of marine-derived nutrients from the ocean to inland ecosystems, enriching rivers, forests, and floodplains far from the coast.

But today:
Rising water temperatures caused by climate change have disrupted spawning success and increased mortality during migration, as salmon are highly sensitive to even small thermal changes. Habitat loss from urban expansion, forestry, and agriculture has degraded the river’s spawning grounds, while sedimentation and pollution have further reduced water quality. Industrial infrastructure (dams, culverts, and fish farms) has altered natural flow patterns and introduced disease and parasites that weaken already stressed populations. Overfishing and competition from hatchery-raised fish have compounded these threats, eroding the genetic diversity essential for long-term resilience.

After being away for most of the summer, it has been so nice to play in my own backyard these past few weeks.

The first days of Fall are always my favourite. When the salmon are running, the other animals are getting ready for winter, the mountains see their first snow dusting. And the temperatures are just perfect.

I’m scrambling (literally) to get as many adventures in as possible before I get my skis out of storage. I’m not quite ready for winter yet!

Greenland, Greenland , Greenland

Sometimes it’s hard for me to put into words how I feel about the north.
I’m not even sure where this love comes from.
After all, I grew up in Paris, close to the Eiffel Tower, and far from the labrador tea and the dwarf fireweed.
But I remember seeing the Yukon for the first time when I was 7 years old, and falling head over heels in love with the tundra. With the grand nothingness. With the rocks, the lichen, the cottongrass, the birds and the caribou. I remember my heart breaking after the trip, and somehow that’s exactly how I still feel every time I come back south of the 60th parallel. After every trip to Alaska and the Yukon and Sápmi and the Hudson Bay. And Greenland.

There was ice in the water,
And the sun didn’t set. taken in Greenland by @downdirtroads
