Happy Friday! Summer in the air in Melbourne

Donna Summer blending into Jem and the Holograms

I have to admit, I used to hate it when Jem came on instead of things like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But even as a kid, I couldn’t deny that this was an absolute banger. 😂

Amazing art work on this record produced by a toy company

JEM!

Eminem - Real Slim Shady

Soul II Soul’s smooth groove meets Eminem’s unmistakable flow. A little time-travel mashup for the weekend.

Hypnotic downtempo from Bonobo pairing perfectly once again with Mobb Deep.

Bonobo – D Song
X
Mobb Deep – Survival of the Fittest

The warm, organic groove of Bonobo, with its temple-esque serenity, is worlds apart from Mobb Deep’s stripped-back grit, yet somehow, they work....

Air meets Dr. Dre in this vinyl mash-up

“Talisman” from Moon Safari is a classic cosmic chill tune, but Vegyn threw a 4/4 beat underneath it on his recent remix album, Blue Moon Safari, completely flipping the mood.

I put a Dr. Dre acapella over the top, taking it somewhere very, very different from the original.

30 years ago today, Tupac Shakur passed away at just 25 years old.

I remember his death being hugely reported on when I was a kid, and now, 30 years later, the events surrounding his murder are still making headlines, with a conviction coming only two weeks ago. Crazy!

It inspired me to put together this melancholic mash-up as a small homage to Tupac, that era, and also his mother, Afeni Shakur.

I blended the vocals over Catching Flies, a modern downtempo tune that I find introspective, beautiful and a bit somber.

Tupac – Dear Mama

Catching Flies – Ojai

30 years on. Rest in peace, Tupac. 🕊️

Not downtempo, but a rip-roaring good time!

Gnarls Barkley – Crazy
×
Kelis – Milkshake

I’ve had this Gnarls Barkley tune for about 20 years, an absolute banger with Danger Mouse on production. I picked up this Kelis record recently in a $5 bargain bin, and every track on the record was worn / had taken an absolute pounding....all those except the acappella!

The result: Friday Feels early 2000'a mash up

Lauren Hill at her best over the romantic sounds of Grover Washington Jr and Bill Withers in this session of Mash Ups No One Asked For.

The Fugees - Ready Or Not
X
Grover Washington Jr - Just The Two Of Us

I used to think my electric music taste was a bit of a curse, no locked in genre, just buying whatever and playing whatever I wanted. But it's been a joy to rummage through the crates getting creative inspiration along the way with these mash ups

Tupac -One Day At A Time

A chill downtempo classic which has seen many a sunrise with conscious poetry from the streets.

This is the full clip of the story i posted from last weekend and the first of several installments of:
Mash Ups No One Asked For.

Enigma - Sadness Pt. 1 vs Nas - If I ruled the world

Both absolute tunes in their own right!

It's fun getting creative with genres that shouldn't belong together on a Sunday afternoon.
