Back when Joe Usman ran a restaurant, E. Pat Larkins was a regular for coffee. Pat kept showing up, for Joe and for people on their way up.

“Pat was a giant in Pompano.” - Eulah Foster-Reed

Northwest Pompano, neighbors traded memories of E. Pat Larkins, the city’s first Black mayor: the kids he mentored, the elders he looked after, the MLK Day march he brought home.

Those stories are now helping shape the design of the new E. Pat Larkins Community Center, part of the New Downtown.

The next input session is Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 6 PM at the center, 520 Martin Luther King Blvd.

What happens inside a community center matters just as much as what it looks like.

Stacey Boyton (@studio_usdesign) and Damon Hewlin (@meticulousarch) recently walked through the E. Pat Larkins Community Center. It will stay in his name, and his legacy stays at the heart of this process. The goal is to hear what you want, so every square foot gets used.

That’s where you come in. Session 4 is a family game night with a sweet treat, and a chance to share the programs and spaces you’d love to see.

Bring your children. Bring your friends. Bring your ideas. Every generation has something to contribute.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the job fair and info sessions. Here's what happens next:

→ Suffolk & ROCA are reviewing bid submissions
→ Once selected, Suffolk will host another job fair (stay tuned for dates)
→ Suffolk will pair submissions with vendors and suppliers
→ Closer to construction, an additional job fair will be held for the construction industry
