Colorado native John Doyle has spent decades carving sculptures that reflect both the natural world and the place he calls home 🪵As part of The Colorado Connection, presented by @RedBrickAspen, Doyle brings his distinctive wood sculptures to Intersect Aspen. A Colorado native who has called Aspen home for much of his career, Doyle first began carving while living in a rustic cabin on Aspen Mountain, where a suggestion to create a totem pole sparked a lifelong artistic practice.Today, his work ranges from monumental wood sculptures inspired by nature and place to powerful contemporary statements, including his recently completed “AR15/Flower,” a nearly eight-foot-tall sculpture carved from wood with a copper flower emerging from its barrel—a striking reflection on violence, peace and transformation.Experience @doylecarves’s work at Intersect Aspen, July 28–August 1.🎟️ Tickets available at the link in bio._Images 1: John Doyle, “Maori Groot.” spruce, 76 x 18 in. Congratulations to our recent Elks Traverse finishers, @carlyvalerious @mathiasgruber_ @_mariankrogh @theemelkel as well as some others I’m aware of that have achieved it on foot or skis starting with @nealbeidleman and @munch_machine_jeff . @jordancwhite @whoischop @michaelcwirth @vwmajor @simihamilton Late last century, I participated in something we called The Elk Traverse. The only beta available was personal experience or Lou Dawson‘s first guidebook. And actually an airplane flight with @sboonec to scout our route. Our mission was to ski Mt.Sopris and Casle Peak and try to follow the highest route through the Elks that we could. A #coloradohauteroute .Our team included me, Doug Bitterman, Dan Bunta and Andy Ward. We summitted Sopris and Castle, skied over 11 mountain passes, skied into Gunnison County 3 different times. Our lowest elevation (except for the start and the finish) was Snowmass Lake at 10,980 feet.Our trip took 9 days; we could’ve done it in 8 but we had some extra food and decided to spend an extra day at the Conundrum Hot Springs because we could. Nobody was in a hurry to get back to civilization. I believe we still have the FKT because, to my knowledge, no one has repeated our route. 1) Approaching Capitol on the Elk Ridge. 2) Doug skis into Pierre Lakes Basin. 3) Dan and Andy’s tent suffers an explosion in PLB 4) Me starting up Heckert Pass. 5) Our Lost Remuda Basin camp: High Winds. 6) Skiing into Fravert Basin under S Maroon. 7) Ascending out of W Maroon. 8) Our second sojourn into Gunnison County. 9) Leaving Conundrum, climbing the backside of Castle. 10) Montezuma Basin. #skimo #skimountaineering #skiuphill #skitour #getoutside #springskiing #hauteroute by @doylecarves

In Aspen you sometimes get to meet your heroes; I got to participate in honoring one of mine recently.Shepard Fairey, aka @obeygiant , is an artist and social activist. Shepard uses his platform to advocate for equality, justice, and environmental preservation, themes which mirror Aspen’s values. ASPEN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS ARE GOING TO A RUNOFF ON APRIL 1ST! 🗳️🗳️🗳️ While I received the most votes, I was 32 votes short of the threshold to avoid a runoff. The day after the election, March 5, Mayor Torre and I went to Denver for a Colorado Association of Ski Towns (CAST) meeting.We met with House Speaker Julie McCluskie at her office in the State Capitol building to discuss Ski Town issues the State Legislature is currently working on. From there, we walked three blocks to the Colorado Municipal League (CML) offices where Governor Polis gave us an update including the reintroduction of passenger rail to the Front Range and Steamboat Springs. I was able to ask him a question about reintroduction of passenger rail to the Roaring Fork Valley.Representation on Boards and Committees are super important to me. I actually enjoy traveling down to Denver and the Front Range as well as assorted ski towns throughout our state to represent Aspen in person.I have made many connections over the last four years. I put in the the extra time and effort because Aspen deserves my best effort.I hope to have your Vote on April 1st! by @doylecarves
