My mother, Donna Marie Polito, passed away Thursday morning after a brief battle with ALS.

She was the greatest and most supportive mother that two sons could have ever asked for, and for a brief time, the most wonderful grandmother. If you knew her, you knew just how special and unique she was. She was the kindest, most selfless, thoughtful, classy, and strongest person I have ever known.

She gave everyone she met the benefit of the doubt and had a remarkable ability to make friends wherever she went. She was the constant presence in my life, always there when I needed her. She was my rock, my soul and she knew me better than I knew myself.

She was one of the funniest people I knew. She never took herself too seriously, and even during the darkest moments of the past year, we still found humor and light together.

I feel incredibly grateful to have had a mother like her. While I am heartbroken that her grandson, Luca, won’t get to experience her the way myself and many others got to, it brings me comfort knowing that I will be able to share with him just how amazing, loving, and funny she was.

Born and raised in Maryland, she was a true Maryland girl who loved hard-shell blue crabs and spending sunny days at the beach. I know she’s now resting on a beautiful beach in the sky.

Awkward photo of me back in 1999 repping a Foo Fighters t-shirt! My four favorite drummers back then: Jimmy Chamberlin, Travis Barker, Dave Grohl, and Taylor Hawkins, and my favorite band at the time had two of them!
Taylor Hawkins first Foo’s record There’s Nothing Left To lose is still my favorite Foo Fighters album. As an aspiring amateur drummer back then the Foo Fighters were the dream band to look up to. One of my favorite Foo memories was back in 2002 when y100 announced they were going to play for the first time ever the NEW Foo Fighters song “All My Life.” I rushed home from school and waited hours with anticipation by my alarm clock radio to hear the new single. The DJ finally announced “alright..here it is..” and I sat there taking it all in. The song was over and I had to wait another hour to hear it again. I loved the song, I remember thinking it was different but in a good way, it was heavier. I was lucky enough to see them that same year on the One By One tour thanks to my dad, it was my first rock concert. It was a treat to watch Taylor behind the kit, he had his own style. Music was everything to me back then and the Foos were the cornerstone in that development. One of the greatest drummers ever.

10 years ago I moved to NYC for what was supposed to be a three month internship. I started my career, saw the Mets in the World Series and met my wife..among many other great times and memories. I love this city and was very lucky to have and aunt and uncle on Long Island who gave that broke 23 year old a chance. It’s extremely corny but I remember driving on the Verrazzano bridge, looking at the city..rolled down my window and blasted Bruce Springsteen’s “Born To Run,” it was a small but big moment for me. by @dpolitodesign
