🏆 Happy National Coaches Day!

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteer coaches who give their time, energy, and heart to DPR Athletics.

Our coaches do more than teach the game—they encourage teamwork, build confidence, create positive experiences, and make a lasting impact on Durham’s young athletes.

To every volunteer coach who shows up, cheers loudly, teaches patiently, and helps our players grow: THANK YOU! 👏

🌱 Did you know Edison Johnson Recreation Center has a community garden?

This past summer our staff hosted an amazing program where youth were able to learn all about gardening! We look forward to offering the program again in the spring!

We’re currently seeking volunteers to help maintain the garden. Whether you have a green thumb or simply want to give back, we’d love to have you join us.

Durham Parks and Recreation, along with the City’s Community Partnerships & Engagement team, are working together to reconnect residents with Oakwood Park and celebrate its return as a welcoming space for families, children, and neighbors.

Earlier this summer, the City’s Community Safety Department worked directly with the individuals who had been living in Oakwood Park. Staff offered temporary housing and wraparound services, and as part of the City’s August–September housing sprint, 10 neighbors from the park have now been housed, with several more on track to be housed this week.

With residents safely connected to services, City teams made necessary repairs, removed damaged or unsafe structures, and cleaned the park so it can once again serve this neighborhood as a safe, accessible, family‑friendly space.

We invite everyone to join us for National Night Out and enjoy an evening in the park with your community! We’ll have free food, drinks, games, family‑friendly activities, and opportunities for you to share your ideas for the future of Oakwood Park.
