Injuries happen at the studios. You’re performing for long hours for many weeks. Lots of stress with learning new shows, new material, new moves, new people.Luckily, the studios provided a physical therapist that specializes in the performing arts with 10+ years of experience working with dancers, aerialists, acrobats, vocalists, bboys, contortionists, handstanders, hand to hand acts and anything else I left out!.Take the guess work out of injury management- forget random rehab exercises, relentless foam rolling and stretching- that will only get you so far!.Learn WHY you experienced this injury. Learn HOW to independently manage your pain. Get on a performer specific strength training program to PREVENT this from happening again. Give YOURSELF the gift of continuing your career with less worry. by @dr.abbate

Vision, vestibular system & proprioception work together to maintain balance & coordination in dynamic environments Remove one, and the system needs to adjust.Remove vision and the other two systems contribute more But if those ‘intact’ systems are not supplementing correctly, poor balance results. In this example we have Jess, a talented dancer for Royal Caribbean, with very poor vision, demonstrating how important glasses are.She doesn’t like glasses or contacts so I’m writing this post not just to educate athletes, but also to get her mom to gift her the blessing of LASIK eye surgery. This will reduce her injury rates (better balance) & prolong her career by @dr.abbate

Looks good. Not good. .While extra flexibility will get you that aesthetic look, it’s also predisposing you to certain types of injuries & other chronic conditions. With most of the cast members I work with, I often de-emphasize stretching & focus on end range of motion strength training. This is especially important for professional athletes- control is maintained throughout the joints range- that’s what gives you the graceful, easy, natural look by @dr.abbate

Two groups of muscle control vocalization: intrinsic & extrinsic. In this video we review the intrinsic muscle group: cricothyroid, thyroarytenoid, posterior and lateral cricoarytenoid & interarytenoid muscles.Collectively they alter the vocal folds to control position, length, tension & vibration.Intrinsic muscles are innervated by the vagus nerve & CN X.Like all muscles, these can become dysfunctional (poor prep, over training), causing difficulty with vocalization. A singer may report an increase in tension in the front of the neck, inability to change pitch smoothly or an inability to cleanly hit a specific note by @dr.abbate

I love my craft and being able to help other athletes is an extremely rewarding experience .Athletes take a beating- constant work, psychologically prepared for competition- and they still dont have a guaranteed outcome. They just put in the work and make the most of what they prepared for.I’m blessed that they trust me with guiding them through their injury by @dr.abbate

The neck muscles are often described as performing two functions.1. Stabilization: deep & close to the joint, these muscles are designed to keep that bowling ball head moving on a solid base.2. Mobilization: more superficial & further from the spine, create torque that produces movement.Given these two groups & their different characteristics, it is prudent for strength training programs to emphasize isometrics for stability & dynamic strength training to the end range of movement.#neckpain #dancer #aerialist #handstand by @dr.abbate

Recovery from an injury is best sought from professionals- they have the education (minus the gimmicks and guru chatter), the experience (find a therapist that aligns with your profession- athletes:athletes) & the tools (good physios will spend all their waking hours learning how to better care for their patients) by @dr.abbate

Return to sport isn’t always linear and pain is not always a limiter.Often enough, an athletes *fear* of reinjury is enough to prevent them from progressing to the next step.Jumping after a lower limb injury is one such fear.I usually start athletes on a jumping program after pain can be independently managed (without medication) AND the patient states they are ready to begin jumping.I use bands, progressively higher jumps, 2-1 foot progressions & then more dynamic jumps (lateral, cross, pivots etc…) by @dr.abbate
