For the second time in my life, I have retired from a career that I truly loved. My first career was as a track and field athlete and now I have retired from the world of education. Believe me when I say the approach for each of these careers could not be any different. As an athlete, one knows it’s about self. You must be selfish in all things in order to reach the pinnacles of success. In the realm of education, you must be selfless and self-effacing. Remembering, it is truly about the students we serve and how to ensure they receive the highest quality education possible, whether they want it or not! In 1993, I began this journey of education in Stockton, Ca as a substitute teacher before obtaining a position as a high school special education teacher, then an assistant principal, to a principal, and finally ending as a director in West Sacramento. Over the years, I had also been able to continue my education by receiving my Master’s and Doctorate in education. With all of the various teams I worked with over the years, whether it be district level, administrators, support staff, or parents, we always pushed, prodded, and challenged each other to give students our very best. With the mindset of being collaborative, collegial, cohesive units, we believed we could reach a higher level of success…….We grew better together! I only hope that over the years, I made a difference in the lives of the students I served. I want to thank everyone who have encouraged, mentored, and motivated me so that I could be the best version of myself to serve the students in both Stockton Unified School District and Washington Unified School District. Now I am creating a path to my next career…..ummmmmmm maybe remain in the world of education or go back to my first love of track and field - coaching? Stay Tuned!
