What a great night of Friday Night Lights at the Southern vs. Riverside football game! It was exciting to see both teams compete, and both bands and cheer squads did an outstanding job bringing energy and school spirit to the game.

Athletics, extracurricular activities, and the arts are an important part of the educational experience. They help students build confidence, develop discipline, strengthen teamwork, and create a sense of belonging. These experiences complement classroom learning and contribute to academic success and the development of the whole child.

Proud to see our DPS students shining both on and off the field!

I was excited to meet with Durham Police Chief Stephanie Mardis and continue building a strong partnership between Durham Public Schools and the Durham Police Department. This was the first of many conversations, and I look forward to working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our scholars, staff, and families. When we work together, our entire community benefits!

It was a pleasure to be surrounded by so many leaders and advocates committed to the future of North Carolina. I especially appreciate Representative Hawkins for his continued advocacy and support for public education and for the work he does on behalf of our DPS scholars, staff, and communities.

And yes… I’m proud to say I won the Bow Tie Contest for the second year in a row!

Grateful for the fellowship, the conversations, and the opportunity to celebrate the people who continue to make a difference in our state and in Durham. by @dr.anthonylewis

Two years ago today, surrounded by my family, I was sworn in as Superintendent of @durham_public_schools and began this journey in Durham with a simple commitment: every decision we make as adults must be centered around our scholars.

Two years later, that commitment remains unchanged.

We’ve faced challenges. We’ve overcome obstacles. And through it all, we’ve continued to build and strengthen the systems, structures, and supports necessary for lasting success. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together, while recognizing that the work isn’t finished.

The vision is bold: to become the premier school district in the country. That doesn’t happen overnight. It happens by doing the hard work, putting the right systems and people in place, holding ourselves to high expectations, and remaining relentlessly focused on ensuring every scholar thrives.

I’m grateful for my family, who continues to be my foundation, and for our scholars, educators, families, staff, School Board, and community who believe in what is possible for Durham Public Schools.

And stay tuned….you are going to hear a lot more about #TheDPSDifference.

Two years down. The best is yet to come.

Today, I had the privilege of stopping by the 15th Annual Back to School Community Day at Greater Emmanuel Temple of Grace, and I was reminded once again of the power of community.

A special thank you to Eld. Demarcus Williams, Pastor Marion E. Wright, and the entire Greater Emmanuel Temple of Grace Church family for your extraordinary commitment to the children and families of East Durham.

I am especially grateful for the church’s proximity and partnership with YE Smith and Eastway Elementary Schools.

Thank you, Greater Emmanuel Temple of Grace, for continuing to invest in our children and demonstrate what is possible when we work together for the common good.

We’re here at the DPS Greater Durham Attendance Summit bringing together city and county leaders, community partners, business leaders, parents, students, and DPS leaders around one shared challenge: student attendance.

Attendance is not simply a school issue, it is a Durham issue. Behind every absence is a scholar, a family, and often a barrier that requires all of us to work together to address.

Today, we’re moving beyond the numbers and asking a critical question:

What can all of us do (together) to ensure our scholars are in school, engaged, and on the path to success?

Because when a Durham scholar succeeds, Durham succeeds.

One of the best nights I’ve had as a Dad!

I surprised my daughter Kailey with tickets to see Hamilton at the Durham Performing Arts Center, and as one of the biggest Hamilton fans you’ll ever meet, she was absolutely thrilled. From the opening number to the final curtain call, she enjoyed every single moment of the performance.

But the surprises didn’t stop there.

After the show, she had the incredible opportunity to meet several cast members and get their autographs. Then came the ultimate surprise….getting to spend some time behind the scenes with Tyler Fauntleroy, who plays Alexander Hamilton. He was incredibly gracious, taking time to talk with us, share his experience, show us the set and costumes, and make an already unforgettable evening even more special.

Seeing my daughter’s excitement throughout the night and watching one of her favorite shows come to life was priceless. These are the memories that last a lifetime.

A huge thank you to Lawrence Williams and his Wife and especially @wendelltabb for helping make this such a magical experience. #Hamilton #DPAC #FatherDaughterTime #TylerFauntleroy by @dr.anthonylewis

These past couple of days, our son Braxton has made us incredibly proud!

He earned:
🏆 1st Place with the Highest GPA in his college program, MSEN at NC State
📚 A-Honor Roll
💰 $400 Leadership Award for Black & Belonging
🗳️ Incoming Neal Middle School SGA Vice President
🎥 Created a video advocating for Mental Health Awareness
🥇 He and his team from Neal won 1st Place Gold in the Duke University Middle School STEM Challenge

As people continue to share why they chose DPS, this is exactly why #IChoseDPS — specifically Neal Middle School.

They have helped my son come out of his shell and truly embrace the gifts that were already embedded in him. Neal simply helped those gifts shine even brighter and ignited the limitless potential in him!

We are beyond proud of you Braxton! #ProudParent #IChoseDPS #NealMiddleSchool #STEM DPSProud by @dr.anthonylewis

Still in shock hearing about the passing of Kyle Busch. I was literally just with him two days ago at the opening of @andrettidurham. Moments like this are a reminder of how precious life truly is. Tomorrow is never promised, so hug your people a little tighter, speak your love openly, and never take a single day for granted. Rest easy. 🙏🏾 by @dr.anthonylewis

Thank you to Senator Sophia Chitlik and Senator Natalie Murdock for joining us for our Legislative Roundtable and for engaging in meaningful dialogue around the needs and opportunities facing Durham Public Schools. Partnerships and conversations like these are essential as we work together on behalf of our students, staff, and community.

A special thank you to Board Vice Chair Rogers for her vision and leadership in bringing this important opportunity together, our entire School Board, and to the members of our Legislative Steering Committee for drafting our priorities and for their dedication and hard work during this process. Together, we continue building strong connections that help move our district forward. #WeAreDPS by @dr.anthonylewis

Today was another reminder of why graduation season is truly the most wonderful time of the year for me as Superintendent of Durham Public Schools. It was an honor to attend our Project SEARCH Graduation and celebrate these incredible scholars as they reached such an important milestone.

Project SEARCH continues to open doors and create opportunities for students to build independence, confidence, and career readiness for the future. Watching our graduates walk across the stage today filled me with tremendous pride and joy.

Congratulations to all of our graduates, families, staff, and community partners who helped make this journey possible. The future is bright, and our scholars are ready! #WeAreDPS #ProjectSEARCH by @dr.anthonylewis
