You don’t have to spend an hour exercising to support your mobility.

A few minutes of intentional movement every day can make a bigger difference than most people realize.

If you’re over 50 or caring for someone who is start with consistency, not intensity.

🛁 A relaxing bath shouldn’t turn into a fall risk.

The bathroom can be one of the riskiest rooms in the house especially when you add water, slippery surfaces, getting in and out of the tub, and trying to stand up when you’re wet.

And here’s the thing:
Fall prevention isn’t about giving up the things you enjoy. It’s about making them safer.

Before your next bath, ask yourself:

• Is there something sturdy to hold onto?
• Is the tub easy to get in and out of?
• Is the floor slippery when wet?
• Do you have to twist, reach, or step over anything awkwardly?
• Could you safely get up if you lost your balance?

Small changes can make a BIG difference in staying independent.

👀 Want to know what else I look for when evaluating a home for fall risks?

My OT@Approved Home Safety & Fall Risk Guide is on my Beacons page.

👉 Go to my Beacons link and grab your guide.

Because the goal isn’t just a safer bathroom.

It’s staying independent at home.

Hospitalizations rarely feel sudden to healthcare professionals.
Usually there were warning signs first that slowly became “normal.”

Less movement.
More unsteadiness.
Avoiding certain tasks.
Needing help more often.

The earlier families notice these changes, the more opportunity there is to protect safety and independence.

That’s why I created a simple printable prevention guide for adults and caregivers who want to stay ahead of the warning signs.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and older.

And the first fall matters.

One fall can lead to fear of falling, reduced activity, loss of confidence, and loss of independence.

That’s why prevention needs to happen before the fall.

I’m a Doctor of Occupational Therapy, and I created my Home Safety Guide to help you identify common fall risks in your home, room by room.

Don’t wait for the first fall to tell you what needs to change.

🍂 I love a beautiful home for fall. The pumpkins, the black and white details, the cozy touches that make home feel like YOUR place.

But here’s what I want you to think about.

Will your home still support your independence tomorrow?

As an occupational therapist with years of home health experience, I know that the little things we overlook at home can become big problems when they affect our ability to move around safely.

You don’t have to wait for a fall to start making changes.

My Home Safety Checklist to Prevent Falls helps you review your home room by room so you can identify potential hazards and take practical steps toward safer living.

Because the goal isn’t just to stay in your home.

It’s to stay in the home you love, safely and independently.

I’m Dr. Danielle Cloyd, a Doctor of Occupational Therapy.

I got into occupational therapy because of my grandparents.

They lived in rural West Virginia, where access to healthcare and resources wasn’t always easy.

But they wanted what so many older adults want:

To stay in their own home.
To remain independent.
To age in place.

That’s what made me realize how important occupational therapy can be in helping people safely live the life they want at home.

And that’s where my passion for fall prevention began.

After years of working in home health, I’ve seen firsthand how small things inside a home can become big safety risks.

A rug.
A cluttered pathway.
Poor lighting.
A bathroom that isn’t set up safely.

You don’t have to wait for a fall to happen before you make changes.

That’s exactly why I created my Home Safety Guide to Prevent Falls.

It’s the guide I wish more families had BEFORE something happens.

If you’re caring for an aging parent, or you want to protect your own independence, don’t guess where to start.

Use the checklist. Walk through your home. Find the risks. Fix them before they become a fall.

Dana, this is your sign to stop waiting for the fall.

Your parent may feel completely comfortable in their home.

But familiar does not always mean safe.

The rug they’ve had for 10 years.
The dim hallway.
The clutter beside the bed.
The bathroom they navigate half asleep.
The stairs they take every single day.

These are the things I look at as a home health occupational therapist.

You don’t have to wait for your parent to get hurt before you start looking for the risks.

If staying home matters to your parent, start here.

My Home Safety Checklist walks you through the home room by room so you can start spotting the things that could increase fall risk.

Get it today through the link in my bio.

If staying in your home matters to you, start here.

You don’t have to wait for a fall.

You don’t have to wait for your daughter to point out what she’s worried about.

And you don’t have to wait until someone else is making decisions about where you should live.

Start with your own home.

Look at the bathroom.
The stairs.
The rugs.
The lighting.
The clutter.
The places you walk every single day without giving them a second thought.

My Home Safety Checklist walks you through your home room by room so you can identify potential fall risks and make changes now.

Because independence isn’t something you protect after you lose it.

You protect it before you need to.

If staying home matters to you, start here.

Holidays are coming. This is your reminder to not only take care to set a pretty table, but to set a plan for keeping the pathway clear for your elderly loved ones. Falls are common during holidays. Things moved, crowds gathered, toys on the floor. Before a fall makes the day un merry take a moment to prioritize and assess the environment. The fall you prevent today ensures a time full of cheer for the future. #FallPrevention #ThanksgivingSafety #AgingInPlace #HomeSafety #OlderAdults by @dr.daniellefallprevention

Thanksgiving can change your home in a matter of hours.

Extra chairs.
Shopping bags.
Serving dishes.
Coats.
Kids running around.
People walking in every direction.

What was an easy walking path yesterday can become a fall hazard today.

Before the crowd arrives, take 2 minutes to look at your home from a fall prevention perspective:

Can someone easily get from the bedroom to the bathroom?
Can they get to the kitchen without squeezing around furniture?
Are there cords, bags, rugs or other obstacles in the path?

Because the safest Thanksgiving is one where everyone makes it to the table safely. ❤️

Save this before the guests arrive. #FallPrevention #ThanksgivingSafety #AgingInPlace #HomeSafety #OlderAdults by @dr.daniellefallprevention

You know your home.
You know the route.
You’ve walked it a thousand times.

But at night, fatigue can change the way you move and how quickly you respond to an obstacle.

And that’s why I pay attention to the nighttime path to the bathroom when I’m thinking about fall prevention.

Save this as your reminder to look at your home from a sleepy person’s perspective. 👀

Pretty bathrooms can hide BIG fall risks. 👀

As a Doctor of Occupational Therapy, when I walk into a bathroom, I’m not just looking at the beautiful fixtures. I’m looking at how safely someone can move through the space.

That decorative runner? Potential trip hazard.

That beautiful tub? How safely can someone get in and out?

The shower? Is there a secure place to hold on? Is the floor slippery?

The lighting? Can someone safely navigate the bathroom during a nighttime trip?

I love a beautiful home. But I love a home that allows you to stay independent even more.

Your home should support your independence, not put it at risk.

Don’t wait for a fall to start looking around.

Save this and take a second look at your bathroom.

Want to know what else to look for? Get my OT-approved Home Safety Checklist. It’s a room-by-room guide to identifying potential fall risks before they become a problem.
