Last week had the honor of being part of the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center with a ton of my old colleagues from the campaign and WH. The highlight was taking the kids through the museum on opening day with Zen gazing up at the HOPE Poster knowing his Dad & Uncle Yosi @a35mmlife did so much to make that happen. And Sage thinking I did a magic trick by pulling the blue rocker button through the glass case —not knowing I had a few of the original vintage ones we designed & had made for the campaign in my pocket, that I took out of storage before the trip so I could give ‘em out for free like we did back in the day. Coolest thing about it was Sage gave me a look “wow Daddy… you really did help didn’t you!?” that you can see a glimmer of in the pics. Special shout out to all the OPE / IGA / DPC homies and to my big bro @mikestraut -You outdid yourself brutha and made us all proud! #YesWeCan taken in Barack Obama Presidential Center by @dr.dwash

Congrats @aliciakeys 🙌🏽 Beyond proud of you and honored to be part of @hellskitchenbway Opening Night on Broadway! 🎭 Still floating from all the amazingness… had to take a couple days to even post anything☺️. Special shout-out to the amazing @michelleobama and all the other friends and family who came out to celebrate Alicia. The musical’s story loosely based on AK’s life so the pic with her Mom is after me saying “I have a lot of amazing and healthy transference (see psychology meaning) because I too was raised by a badass single white Mom!” and our selfie caught us both cracking up with pure joy. If y’all get a chance, go see it cuz I know you’ll luv it. ✨ taken in New York, New York by @dr.dwash

@lucasmuseum visit yesterday was next level. From the zero right angles in the lobby to the kind staff to just the flow and layout of everything. Can’t recommend it more highly and the Star Wars exhibit is only a fraction of all the other art and amazingness. It might became a monthly pilgrimage for our family! #mtfbwy taken in Lucas Museum of Narrative Art by @dr.dwash

🍦☀️🎡75th Fiesta La Ballona. Hot as a mutha’… but buckets of fun & luv Sage and Zen getting to enjoy the memories I had rolling to it 45 years ago. Except I’m not as cool 😎 as them and never got filmed for the official highlight reel of the event —then again, I ate ice cream a wee bit more elegant than them!🤣 taken in Fiesta La Ballona by @dr.dwash

Happy <<May the 4th be with You>> Day!!! It’s a year to the day I laid my Mom to rest and I’m feeling an interesting calm… dare I say “one with the Force.” I’ve purposefully bookended this reel of pics with her in her ethereal Jedi Grand Master ghost form, and one of her grandkids with their aspiring Jedi Master Dad, to signify the circle of life —and that she’ll forever be with us. For all you fellow Force weilders out there, may you smile and feel some extra joy today as all our ancestors smile down on us. May the Force be with You… Always. #501st #mtfbwy #maythe4th by @dr.dwash

🎂🎉Zen’s 11th bday today! Fun pics from his “sleep under” pool & gametruck party this wknd. And pics from this morning after opening the one present he wouldn’t stop hounding me on… a retro Sony Walkman! Remember those yellow bad boys!? He’s into all things retro electronic these days. Thank goodness found some of my old cassettes and a mix tape I had some 80s/90s jams on. Driving him to school this morning (red hoodie) “Dad… you had some good taste”🤣. Not sure if I should feel complemented or insulted but I’ll go with the fact it made my day! 😍🙌🏽🎂🎉 by @dr.dwash

Way back in 1983, my first YMCA Summer Camp Counselor was David Hartmire. As a shy, introverted 11 yr old, I grew to call the Culver-Palms Family YMCA home because my single parent Psych Nurse Mom worked a ton.
Little did I know back then, all that extra time she spent visiting with Hartmire at pick up or drop off, she was doing what all we extra luving parents do —bonding, appreciating, being extra kind and supportive— to a care-giver she respected immensely and knew was likely going to have an outsized impact on her beloved son’s life.
Yesterday, over 42 years later, I was part of his retirement ceremony at City Hall in front of the entire Los Angeles City Council —honoring his 4+ decades of service to the youth and families of LA through the YMCA.
I’m tearing up and smiling simultaneously because the Y raised me. In the 1980’s I basically lived there. Summer camp kid, sleep-away Camp Whittle in Big Bear, the first ever 2-Week Caravan, Youth & Government, Teen Y, then Counselor-in-Training, then Counselor, then Camp Director —and now 10 yr plus member on the Board of the Culver-Palms YMCA.
Special shout out to the 1980’s “CPY Golden Years” Counselors —all of whom played a role in shaping me into the person I am today: Kevin Bellinger, Thom Martin, Kelly Graham, Lisa Anderson, Sue Bowles and so so many more.
Enjoy the reel of old school pics Mom had in a photo album of my first time as “Staff” at 15 at Camp Whittle as a CIT, David Hartmire’s big smile as we embrace the full-circle moment, Senior Year at the annual CPY Banquet being awarded Co-Youth of the Year… and me proudly raising my arm knowing I was off to college and a whole new adventure. All other pics are from yesterday with David’s amazing wife, daughter and YMCA family.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽Thank you David Hartmire for your service and being the best f*cking role model a kid could ever have. I would look up, and laugh, and lift. Much luv -d by @dr.dwash
