Alexis has been with us since before the Twin Hoodoo Muthas had a name. She holds a space on our Mutha Board, often working in tandem with us as we host and facilitate powerful Hoodoo experiences. this morning my therapist asked me how well did I think I addressed my intention of the year. I told her that “I knocked it out of the mothafuckin park”

my word of the year was ✨sovereign ✨ and I’ve never felt more powerful.

Long story short, on May 4th I passed my comprehensive exams and went from being a Ph.D. student to a Ph.D. candidate. The process was exhausting however I immediately moved on to the next milestone — writing my prospectus — without acknowledging the milestone of candidacy. I kept pushing off the rest and celebration that I promised (and owed) myself because there is a part of me that believed I wasn’t really deserving of those things. But, that’s a trick of the devil (aka capitalism+anti-Blackness) as my folks would say. So, here’s to me. I am really THAT girl and I did the damn thing.

This is the biggest lesson that I've learned during my time at Hampton University. Through all of the joy and disappointments I have learned the power of love in action. Special shoutout to the family I was born to and the family I found (@kaylasingram and T) for supporting me through it all. •
