Last night I was honored with an award named after our friend and brother Viet. @mr.viet.mai To be recognized in the same spirit for the quiet work he did day after day for our people is the charge I will continue to do.

I met Viet as he was dancing down the aisle at an Elevated poetry night, at the same time bkSOUL and Collective Purpose began creating together. This artistic collaboration became a foundation of the artistic, academic, and community work for over the past twenty years. And the creative work grew into family, sharing many holidays, weddings, gatherings, and births of the next generation.

Humbly receive this award on behalf of the bkSOUL Collective Purpose Family. Gratitude to be able to create deep work alongside you for all these years : Ant Black, Kendrick Dial, Miesha Rice, Rudy Francisco, Jesse Mills, Shivon Carreño, Christopher Wilson, Lavina Rich, Lauren Dockweiler, Misa Suiter, Keomi Tarver, Jacqui Lang, Anna Spalding, Ian Isles, Jessica Gilmore, Amir Khastoo, Francine Blacksher, Joe Soltero, Jessica Molina

Thank you @risesandiego for creating this award to uplift community in honor of Viet.

❤️❤️❤️ to Kendrick @mrlyricalgroove for the beautiful poetry and sound that was shared last night.

We are deeply honored to announce dr. grace shinhae jun as the recipient of the inaugural Viet Mai Artivism Award at this Monday’s Inclusive Leadership in Action Awards!

This special award holds profound meaning for our community. It was created in loving memory of Viet Mai — a brilliant poet, dedicated activist, former RISE fellow, and dear friend whose art and advocacy touched so many lives before his passing last year. The Viet Mai Artivism Award honors those who carry forward his legacy of using creative expression as a catalyst for justice, healing, and social change.

dr. grace shinhae jun embodies this spirit through her work as a scholar, choreographer, educator, and movement artist, constantly centering Hip Hop culture, community resilience, and art as activism.

Join us in celebrating Dr. Jun’s remarkable contributions and uplifting the enduring legacy of Viet Mai! 🕊️✊

Community Office Hours
Love it when our grads reach out to meet as they are out living life. Happy to be a safe, firm, and loving place to be heard and question, especially living as children of immigrants. Sometimes it’s just about affirming what they already know.
