So… how much does a doctor actually make during residency? 👀

The latest AAMC data puts the average PGY-1 stipend at $68,166/year, or about $5,680/month before taxes.

Location matters too. Resident pay is highest on average in the West and Northeast, and lowest in the South. Of course, higher salary ≠ more money in your pocket when your rent also requires a medical degree. 😂

And then there’s the fun part: divide that salary by residency hours and suddenly you understand why residents are so emotionally attached to free hospital coffee.

Still, getting my first US Medical Residency paycheck felt pretty damn cool. 🩺

One day I’m thinking about diabetes and blood pressure, the next I’m learning newborn care, then someone hands me a knee and a needle and says okay, your turn. 💉🫠

And somehow… I genuinely love that.

There’s something really cool about training to take care of people through completely different stages of their lives, while also collecting a slightly chaotic amount of skills along the way.

I’m still VERY much learning. Very much a resident. Very much asking questions. But every rotation adds another little piece to the kind of doctor I eventually want to be.

Anyway, apparently I chose the specialty with all the side quests. 😂

And my easily distracted brain is not mad about it. ✨

“Record yourself in your work clothes and then your weekend clothes” sounded like such a cute idea until I realized my weekend clothes are apparently… also scrubs. 😂

Residency has really blurred the line between work life and personal life because why am I doing a weekend transition just to reveal the exact same profession 😭

But somewhere in the middle of all the long days, I keep reminding myself that I’m working hard at a life that was once just a dream, while building toward all the other big dreams I still have for myself. 🥹

So yes, the weekends look a little different right now, but I know this is just one chapter. And I’m actually really grateful to be living it.

Anyway, happy weekend from me and my not extensive enough collection of ✨different colored scrubs✨ 😂🫶🏼

It’s kind of funny how quickly residency changes your definition of a good day 😂

A few months ago my idea of a good day was waking up with a cappuccino on some little Italian island, watching the sunrise and then heading out to rock climb.

Now?

Coffee still hot? Amazing.
No notes following me home? Actual peace.
Walking out of the hospital while the sun is STILL OUT? I genuinely feel like I won the lottery. 🥹

And if there’s somehow enough daylight left to go to the gym, make dinner, or just sit on my couch for a little while? 10/10 day.

I think that’s one thing I didn’t expect about intern year. You start appreciating really normal things SO much more.

Nothing groundbreaking happened today. I just finished my work, walked outside, saw the sun and was ridiculously happy about it.

The bar is low right now and honestly… I’m okay with it 😂🫶🏼

Apparently becoming a doctor once wasn’t complicated enough 😂

So naturally I decided to start over in the U.S. In my 30s. Because why make life easy? 🫠

I became a doctor in Colombia 🇨🇴, later got my medical degree recognized in Spain 🇪🇸, and now somehow I’m a PGY-1 in the U.S. 🇺🇸 turning 33 next month and learning a whole new healthcare system from the bottom again.

There’s something very humbling about having years of medicine behind you and still walking into work some mornings feeling like you know absolutely nothing 😂

Some days I question the life choices that got me here. Other days I think it’s pretty cool that your 30s don’t have to mean you’re done starting new things.

Anyway… apparently I chose hard mode. Again. 🫠🩺

Any other 30-something IMGs out there starting over too?

Every morning I walk into clinic thinking, “Today I’m staying on top of my notes.” 😌

Then one patient comes in with a list they wrote over the last six months, another squeezes in a “one more thing…” right before walking out, someone needs prior authorizations, refill requests start piling up, also there’s a walk in and my inbox somehow doubles while I’m still seeing patients. 😂

Before I know it, clinic is over… and I’m still documenting 🙂‍↕️.

Finishing that last note feels like winning the day. Until I remember I still have to pre-chart for tomorrow. 🫠😭😂

They said intern year would change my relationships…

They just forgot to mention it would be with a little piece of plastic that has no mouth, no ears, and no feelings… yet somehow I spend half my day talking to it. 😂🎤

I honestly thought I’d never use it because of my accent. Turns out it’s become one of the biggest time savers in my day.

Every note I finish a little faster means a few extra minutes with my husband before he falls asleep. Sometimes it’s enough time to make it to the gym. Sometimes it’s just enough time to eat dinner without rushing.

It’s funny how the smallest things can end up giving you the biggest pieces of your day back. 🤍

Somewhere along the way, eating soup in a call room while reviewing charts stopped feeling weird. 😅

Now the hospital is starting to feel like a second home… and I’m still trying to decide if that’s a good thing or not. 😂

Rounding is basically an emotional roller coaster every single morning. 😂

One minute I feel like I know what I’m doing. The next minute I’m questioning every decision I’ve ever made. Then someone says “good job” and suddenly life is good again. 😅

Two days left of my first inpatient rotation and I can already tell residency is going to change me in the best way.

Getting corrected for the first time as a PGY-1 felt like the end of the world… for about 15 minutes. 😂

Turns out that’s just part of learning. I’m lucky to have seniors who actually teach instead of just expecting us to know everything.

It’s crazy to think I’m already down to my last 3 days of my first inpatient rotation. Time is flying. 🩺🤍

Residency survival skill №7: becoming fully functional after a 15-minute nap. 😭😂
Caffeine wasn’t cutting it today. A quick call room nap, my “backup brain” (binder with all my patients info and things I need to do/check/ monitor for them and sub- specialists📒🧠), white coat, stethoscope… and somehow we’re ready for another 5-6h round of work 🫠🫶🏼🫡
PGY-1 life. 🩺🤍

HAPPY 4th 🥳 🇺🇸 EVERYONE! My Saturday started at 5am to be at the hospital by 6:30am 🫶🏼 I try to go to bed early but there’s always something to do and read!
