New publication alert! 🚨

In this study, we find Black caregivers were actively engaging in STEM socialization with their daughters from an early age, prioritizing joyful experiences and opportunities for academic enrichment at home and in the local community. Caregivers challenged their daughters in affirming ways, which instilled
confidence and encouraged curiosity.

S/o to the caregivers!

As usual, leave a comment if you would like a free copy of the manuscript! by @dr.marketa

In 1977, June Jordan and Alice Walker began convening Black women writers monthly in New York City to collaborate and coalition build (Thorsson, 2023). Every third Sunday for two years, the Sisterhood met for a potluck to talk about their work, organize, and, most importantly, find an affirming community of Black women scholars.

In the spirit of the Sisterhood, we are formally creating and convening a network of Black girlhood mental health applied researchers and practitioners (Black Girlhood Mental Health Sisterhood) to build and steward a new collective effort for Black girls’ mental health with support from the Spencer Foundation.

The National Black Women’s Justice Initiative (2021) declared the serious unmet mental health needs for Black girls “a mental health crisis hiding in plain sight” and we aim to transform educational systems towards mental health equity for Black girls.

The composition of the Vision grant team, eight Black women who have worked extensively with and for Black girls, will plan a national Black girls’ mental health research + action agenda that identifies the mental health needs of Black girls, and envisions how to transform Black girl mental health school and community based prevention programming to disrupt mental health inequities.

A Black gilrhood mental health grant led by us for us. A dream in action. We hope you will join the Sisterhood as we launch the project/ envision transformation! Let us know if you’re in ⬇️ 💗 More details soon 💗 by @dr.marketa

Dear Keta Bug, you’re thirty and THRIVING.

You were never afraid of doing the impossible thing. Always a dreamer, your faith has moved mountains. Your authenticity is your superpower. Your classroom inspires confidence. Your research lab sings with laughter. You are building a beautiful legacy.

I am so proud of the little Black girl who didn’t let hardship harden her heart. The teenager who never backed down. The twenty something that decided to dream bigger, because playing small just won’t do. I pray this next chapter reminds you constantly that goodness and mercy follows YOU. That even your silent prayers are answered. That joy is your portion. Always, in all ways. You deserve the world and I plan on giving it to ya. 🩷🤞🏽 by @dr.marketa

Today is International Day of the Girl! A day to celebrate girls all over the world—their brilliance, their questions, and their solutions. Thank you @golivegirl for inviting me to share ways we all can create affirming spaces to support girls of color, prioritizing joy and community.

An honor and a privilege. A little Black girl from the south really made her dreams come true. And you can too. 💫
