I am feeling incredibly grateful to have been recognised along with such a talented shortlist of clinicians this year 🙏🏽

The work-life balance has never felt quite as pronounced as it does right now navigating the ups and downs of fourth trimester with our little koala bear Caylan.

Never ending gratitude to my right and left arm in life; hubby @jon382 and my mum, without whom any kind of balance or achievement would not be possible.

Last pic taken post nappy change during the filming of the winners because as I am fast learning, motherhood stops for no one 😅❤️

Dr Risha, Fulham Road Dental, works in endodontics, where trust has to be built in minutes, not months.

Her patients arrive referred, often distressed, having never met her. One had already walked out of two appointments elsewhere. They sat down apologising, talking to delay the start.

Rather than push forward, she stopped. She acknowledged what they had been through and made clear the appointment had no agenda beyond their comfort. That single shift let the treatment be finished that same day.

The patient wrote to her afterwards, to say it was the first time dentistry had not felt like something happening to them, but with them.

"Not long-term rapport, but depth of trust built fast, and built deliberately."

For an anxious patient, predictability in the first few minutes is its own form of reassurance.

Two great days refreshing all things CBCT with @conebeamguy and Mo Fayad. Seeing things with a fresh pair of (slightly more seasoned 🤪) eyes and the experience of the realities of multiple scanners in practice. I enjoyed the systems and processes taught to help streamline workflows whilst maintaining the highest standards in acquisition, manipulation and reporting. The hardest part of treating an anxious patient rarely involves a handpiece.

Five dentists, from general practice to endodontics.

Different patients, different demands, the same instincts surfacing again and again.
Reading fear before a word is spoken, in the grip on a bag or the edge of a seat. Greeting patients in person and walking them through, rather than sending a nurse. Mapping out exactly what will and will not happen, because the unknown is what the anxious mind magnifies. A stop signal handed over before anything begins. Trust built in minutes for some, across years for others.
More than any single technique, what they shared was presence. The kind patients remember long after they have forgotten what was done.

Thank you very much to our working group – Dr Risha Patel, Dr Shalini Kanagasingham, Dr Mark McAlistair, Dr Rahul Patel, and Dr Alyn Morgan – in addition to all those members who are already using BES Kiroku templates.

The templates we've created aim to be useful for all of our members, with variation in feedback when collated across private specialist practice, practices limited to endo (NHS and private), general dental practitioners completing root canal treatments, and academic/secondary care practitioners.

Dr Risha Patel will be presenting her session "Beyond the file, making irrigation work for you" as she represents the BES at the British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show in Birmingham.

“Effective irrigation remains a cornerstone of successful endodontic treatment but can still be an area of uncertainty and variation in clinical practice.

“My session will provide a practical update on modern irrigation techniques – from solution selection to delivery methods and strategies to enhance outcomes.

“Prevention and management of sodium hypochlorite accidents will be also discussed, equipping clinicians with practical, clinically relevant insights to enhance both safety and success in their everyday endodontic practice.”
