2020. I walked into my first Kois course with Scott Strommer, not knowing how much this place would change the way I practice dentistry.

The Kois Center taught me to think differently—to stay curious, ask better questions, and always strive to be better. John Kois has been such an inspiration throughout that journey.

💙

2026. Six years later, I’m back—this time as a mentor.

Getting to meet this incredible group, share what I’ve learned, and help others grow in their own Kois journey made this full-circle moment even more meaningful.

Grateful to give back to a place that has given me so much. 🤍 by @dr.robfrey

✨ The Magical Four ✨
When it comes to veneers, sometimes enhancing just the front four teeth can completely transform a smile — naturally, beautifully, and efficiently. 😍🦷

Whether it’s closing spaces, improving shape, or brightening the smile, the “Fab Four” often make all the difference.

Most people think veneers are about “perfect teeth.”
They’re not. They’re about feeling like yourself again when you smile.

This case started with orthodontics to build the foundation—because if the architecture is off, no amount of artistry will save it. Then we layered composite veneers using Ivoclar Empress, carefully sculpting translucency, depth, and light reflection.

Not just placing composite…
Layering it. Shaping it. Staining it. Bringing it to life.

The goal was never “white and fake.”
It was natural, balanced, and in harmony with the face.

Now?
A smile that doesn’t get hidden.
A laugh that doesn’t get covered.
A confidence that shows up in every room.

This is what happens when dentistry meets intention.

The glow hits different when you love your smile. ✨

This wasn’t just a veneer case. We started with orthodontics to create the right foundation, then used conservative composite veneers to refine the shape, proportions, and overall harmony of her smile.

And seeing her now? She’s glowing. 🤍

If you’ve been thinking about changing your smile, sometimes the answer isn’t veneers or orthodontics—it’s using both thoughtfully to get the best result while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.

You want a busier schedule? Have you looked at your x-ray analytics? Have you worked on your communication and listening skills? Have you found a mentor that’s been successful and implemented systems with your team? Are you keeping up on continuing education to build your confidence?

Sometimes a smile transformation starts with an accident.

Dental trauma can happen in a split second—a fall, a bike ride, a sport, a workout, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This patient experienced significant trauma to his front teeth, ultimately losing his upper central incisors. The goal wasn’t simply to “replace the missing teeth.” It was to rebuild a smile that looked natural, felt like him, and could function predictably.
Cases like this are also a reminder: protect your teeth when you’re active.

If you participate in contact sports, cycling, skating, skiing, martial arts, or any activity where a fall or impact is possible, consider appropriate protective equipment—and when indicated, a properly fitted mouthguard. 🥊🚴🤼🥋🤺🤾⛹️

Your teeth may be incredibly strong, but they aren’t designed to absorb every type of impact.

And if dental trauma does happen, don’t assume a broken or missing tooth means the end of your smile.

Modern restorative dentistry gives us some remarkable options for rebuilding what was lost.

So grateful for this group of talented dentists, leaders, and friends who constantly push me to be better.

What we’ve built feels rare—in dentistry and in the gay community. Genuine support, real friendship, and a group that truly wants to see each other win.

Proud of these guys and even more grateful to call them my friends. ❤️ by @dr.robfrey

What if your smile didn’t need to be “drilled down” to be transformed? 👀

Composite veneers can be one of the most conservative ways to enhance a smile—especially when we can add what’s missing instead of removing healthy tooth structure.

With composite, we can refine things like:
✨ Shape and proportions
✨ Small gaps and spaces
✨ Worn or chipped edges
✨ Asymmetry
✨ Tooth length and contours

And one of my favorite parts? Composite gives us flexibility. It can often be repaired, modified, or refined over time without immediately committing you to porcelain.

My philosophy with cosmetic dentistry is simple: the best smile isn’t necessarily the one with the most dentistry. It’s the one that achieves your goals while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Sometimes that means whitening.
Sometimes orthodontics.
Sometimes composite.
And sometimes porcelain.

The key is figuring out what your smile actually needs.

Curious what composite veneers could do for your smile?

Responsible esthetics > aggressive esthetics.

Everyone wants the “after.”

Few people ask how much natural tooth was sacrificed to get there.

Whenever I treatment plan for anything esthetic, I go in the order of what my mentors @adamoelvis and @dramandaseay taught me.

It is always about how can I achieve the patients aesthetic outcome without increasing their risk and improving their prognosis. Thank you @koiscenter!

I start thinking the following:

✨ Step 1: Whitening?
✨ Step 2: Orthodontics to put the teeth in the right position?
✨ Step 3: Additive composite?
✨ Step 4: Porcelain only if it’s truly necessary

Porcelain is an incredible material, but it shouldn’t always be the starting point.

In this case, we didn’t prepare a single tooth. No enamel was removed. After orthodontics, we simply replaced the missing portions of the teeth with bonded composite. The patient wasn’t interested in composite veneers, so we restored only what nature had lost. We will talk about minimal or no prep veneers in the future but we have now positioned the patient for long term health.

That’s the philosophy of responsible esthetics.

The strongest tooth is the one you were born with. Enamel is irreplaceable, and every treatment decision should begin with preserving as much of it as possible.

The goal isn’t to do more dentistry.

The goal is to do the RIGHT dentistry.

At the end, I ask myself, did I improve the patients prognosis and reduce their risk? If yes, then that is considered success for me!

Dental phobia is real.

For some people, walking through the door of a dental office can trigger fear, anxiety, and even panic. It is not about being “bad” at going to the dentist. It is often the result of past experiences, trauma, loss of control, or years of avoidance.

That is why I am so proud of Kelly.

Watching her journey has been incredible. What started with fear and uncertainty has turned into confidence, trust, and taking control of her health. Every appointment was a victory. Every step forward was earned.

As dentists, we do more than fix teeth. Sometimes we help people rebuild trust, overcome fear, and realize they are capable of more than they thought possible.

Kelly, thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey. Your courage inspires all of us.

If dental anxiety has kept you from getting the care you need, know that you are not alone. We see you, we understand, and we will meet you where you are. ❤️ by @dr.robfrey

Your gums are a lot like your skin.

If your skin bled every time you washed your face, you wouldn’t ignore it. You’d know something was wrong.

So why do we accept bleeding gums?

Healthy gums should not bleed when you brush, floss, or eat. Bleeding is often one of the earliest signs of inflammation and gum disease, long before you feel pain.

The good news? When caught early, it’s usually much easier to treat.

At our office, we go beyond just looking at your gums. We use advanced diagnostics, including salivary testing, to help identify disease before it becomes a bigger problem.

Because waiting until it hurts isn’t a health strategy.
