Medical gaslighting is a phenomenon that occurs when a medical professional dismisses, undermines, or invalidates a patient's symptom or concern, and instead deems those symptoms as being psychological or imaginary, rather than addressing them as real medical issues. It's a form of psychological manipulation that can leave people feeling frustrated, helpless, and confused.

It's a serious issue that can lead to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and added emotional distress, especially in marginalized communities.

📌 It's a choice, not a mandate.

Accused individuals, along with their defense attorneys, can opt for treatment and supportive services rather than conventional incarceration.

This approach prioritizes recovery and empowerment, addressing both mental health and housing crises.

🔍👩‍⚖️ Breaking down California's groundbreaking CARE Court initiative!

This new approach in the legal system is a game-changer, especially for those with mental health issues.

Here's the scoop:

California's jails have seen a 63% increase in inmates with mental health problems since 2009. CARE Court, standing for Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment, is stepping in to make a difference.

This program offers those with diagnoses like schizophrenia an alternative to jail time, focusing on treatment and support for up to 24 months.

And guess what?

It's voluntary, respecting individual rights while addressing mental health and housing crises.

💰 Plus, there's a massive $14 billion investment in behavioral health services on the horizon. This means expanded access to vital services for those who previously fell through the cracks.

🤔 So, what's your take on this? Can CARE Court help tackle California's housing crisis, reduce jail populations, and improve mental health outcomes? Share your thoughts in the comments!

In response to a thought-provoking comment: yes, the DSM5 has its limitations, and not every diagnosis fits every individual perfectly.

However, it's crucial to understand that the real issue isn't the diagnosis itself; it's the stigma society attaches to it. 📚💭

Mental health labels are not the culprits behind feelings of low self-esteem or worthlessness; rather, it's how society perceives and reacts to these diagnoses.

We need a shift in perspective — to view mental health with empathy and understanding rather than judgment and fear.

Ignoring or oversimplifying mental health issues doesn't make them disappear.

People seek names and diagnoses because they seek relief and understanding.

Let's focus on changing the narrative around mental health and ensure everyone feels supported and validated in their experiences. 🤝💖
