This was a dream I had Esto fue un sueño que yo tuve She looks beautiful, even when things go wrong Ella se ve bonita, aunque a vece’ le vaya mal In her eyes, a smile holding back tears En los ojos, una sonrisa aguantándose llorar The foam on the shore looks like champagne La espuma de sus orilla’ parecieran de champán It’s alcohol for the wounds, to dance away the sadness Son alcohol pa’ las herida’, pa’ la tristeza bailar It’s alcohol for the wounds, ‘cause there’s so much to heal Son alcohol pa’ las herida’, porque hay mucho que sanar In the deep green mountains, you can’t breathe En el verde monte adentro no se puede respirar The clouds are closer, you can talk to God Las nubes están más cerca, con Dios se puede hablar You can hear the farmer crying, another one has left Se oye al jíbaro llorando, otro más que se marchó He didn’t want to go to Orlando, but the corrupt kicked him out No quería irse pa’ Orlando, pero el corrupto lo echo And we don’t know for how long Y no se sabe hasta cuándo They want to take my river and also the beach Quieren quitarme el río y también la playa They want my neighborhood and for grandma to leave Quieren el barrio mío y que abuelita se vaya No, don’t let go of the flag or forget the lelolai No, no suelte’ la bandera ni olvide’ el lelolai ‘Cause I don’t want them to do to you what happened to Hawaii Que no quiero que hagan contigo lo que le pasó a Hawái Be careful, Luis, be careful Ten cuida’o, Luis, ten cuida’o Here, no one wanted to leave, and those who did dream of coming back Aquí, nadie quiso irse, y quien se fue, sueña con Volver LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii Words by: Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio Image: the land of what once belonged to my great grandfather, where he was a farmer & where my father was raised and also farmed—until the agricultural corruption ❤️‍🩹 #dtmf by @dr.speedy.jimenez
had the pleasure of speaking to @queentach about the “Create, Connect, Catalyze” series i’m curating at @urbano_project. i really appreciated our convo on the role of art in civic culture especially because... it’s always felt weirdly polarizing! as i mention in the article, there are people that believe we shouldn’t expect anything besides aesthetic pleasure from art, while others believe that arts experiences are a catalyst for all kinds of social goods. and in a way, both sides of the debate are right—because the word “art” is used as a signifier for so many different kinds of cultural practices. all of which are incredibly dynamic, and occur at the hands of people operating with particular purposes in a specific time and place, with varying levels of creative support (and constraint). so the question becomes: how can we learn to shape and advocate for the kinds of arts experiences we want to see and be a part of? i think we’re seeing a real appetite for art that engages with the current moment, so that question feels like an important one to be asking & i’m grateful that organizations like @urbano_project are willing to hold space for that . . . 📸 by @erinclarkphoto by @dr.speedy.jimenez

This semester, my fall class Practices in Community and Public Art (with the amazing @ruthkathryn at @harvardeducation) is partnering with @harvardartmuseums to lead community engagement programs in connection with the Museum’s “Made in Germany? Art and Identity in a Global Nation” exhibit. We can learn so much about a place and its people by considering its contemporary art, and in this case, taking a look at post-war, post-revolution Germany also offers a reframe for understanding our own ever-present struggles with white supremacy, economic inequality, displacement, and xenophobia. Dealing with these realities as a starting point, through our course project we ask: As we tell the story of who “we” are, how do we make that a more inclusive experience, and what can emerge as a result? Sharing a link to my syllabus in stories & if you are in Boston/Cambridge, don’t miss this exhibit, curated by Lynette Roth and Peter Murphy of @busch_hall by @dr.speedy.jimenez
“Design is speculative; it is about envisioning, as well as manipulating, the future. Designers imagine images, objects, buildings, and systems that do not yet exist. We propose, predict, and advocate for (or in certain kinds of design warn against) visions of the future.” —S. Costanza-Chock Getting ready for a playful civic design + dreaming workshop tomorrow @rawartworkslynn shout out to the Economic Development & Industrial Corporation of Lynn @luisc0tt0 for the ❤️ and to my fave 🐶 for being such a fierce lil ride or die! by @dr.speedy.jimenez

“Black Mountain College helped to establish the idea that an art school is a place of competing and diverse ideas, where… the job of the student is to navigate the complexity of the options, in the hope of finding their own paths through ‘the big question,’ namely, ‘What are you going to do with your time?’” some words from the Black Mountain College Museum 🏔️🖤 by @dr.speedy.jimenez
