Thin sheet metal is a lot easier when you have something helping you on the backside.Not steel, because you do not want your backer welding itself to the joint.Copper or aluminum is the move.For this, we used a scrap piece of aluminum angle clamped behind the weld joint.That does two big things:It helps reduce distortion.It pulls heat away from the weld.And if the joint starts to open up, that backer gives you a better chance to pause, fill the spot, and keep moving without blowing the whole thing apart.Thin metal is still tricky, but a copper or aluminum backer can make it way more manageable.Have you tried this trick before?#Welding #SheetMetal #MIGWelding by @dr.weldz

Tiffany aka the “Riglet” is practically complete. She’s ready to weld. She’s outfitted with 75 foot of lead, rolloutwheel from @triarc_welding_and_supply. A @lincolnelectric ranger 330 mpx and in the tool box a flex cut 35 air plasma and LN-25 wire feeder, along with a gas bottle. She can tig, stick, wire weld, and plasma. Joint design matters a lot when you are welding thin material.A butt joint can be brutal because you are welding right on the edges, and the heat does not have many places to go.A corner joint has a similar problem. It may hold heat a little better, but you are still working on those thin edges.A lap joint is usually more forgiving because one piece helps back up the weld, and you are welding into the body of the other piece.A T-joint can be one of the most forgiving because the heat has more directions to travel, but you still need to aim your arc correctly.Thin metal is not just about settings.Fit-up, joint design, heat path, and technique all matter.Which joint gives you the most trouble?#Welding #SheetMetal #MIGWelding by @dr.weldz

If you can weld really thin sheet metal, you can weld just about anything.This is 22 gauge sheet metal, which is only around .030 thick, so wire size makes a big difference.We started with .035 MIG wire, and it was a fight. Too much heat, sputtering, globs, and burn-through.Then we switched to .025 wire, and it was night and day easier.The smaller wire gives you a better chance of controlling the puddle without cooking the base metal before you can make the weld.Thin metal might look simple, but it can humble you fast.What is your best advice for welding thin sheet metal?#Welding #MIGWelding #SheetMetal by @dr.weldz
