Remembering Dolly Parton by remembering that she didn’t grow up in a one-room log cabin. Fantasies about Appalachia often romanticize an agrarian past but Appalachians were always up on modern trends as any archaeologist, architectural historian, or folklorist can tell you. Reading recommendation: Michael Ann Williams’s book Homeplace! Calling out @people magazine for sloppy reporting and a bunch of folks on social media. Dolly left us explicit challenges to stereotypes about Appalachian isolation and backwardness and we should hear her words, sung also by things. Let’s remember Dolly’s childhood home as she meant us to know it.

I’m looking for curious nerds who want to learn WITH a real archaeologist! I wanna learn from you, too. Let’s hang out! Maybe you’re also an archaeologist, hello! Maybe you want to learn about real archaeology through an expert’s perspective who refuses to code switch into “chaste automaton academic mode.” Maybe you just like watching someone goof off and do some science. Perhaps it is the never-ending OOTD drops fearing @columbia1938 Tamaimi PFG shirts. I’m a fan of quik-dri maxxing. Welcome!

Movie Archaeology vs. Real Archaeology. “Museums” aren’t justification for collecting anything and no one wants those brick fragments, trust. Follow me for funny and real archaeology! #realindianajones #archaeology #ancienthistory #artifacts #archaeologist #moviescene by @dr_archaeology

POV: you’re an archaeologist and 20th-century expert so you can’t resist running a FARB score on your own last-minute costume. FARB= “far be in from the truth” in historical reenactment lingo. ;-)

$5 dress from thrift store: 1 pt of accuracy because it’s a dress and people wore dresses in the 1920s, LOL, but sequins and fringe are Hollywood’s invention. The shoes and stole are close in decade. Bracelet and stockings are legit antiques. Those are 1939 DuPont backseam nylons, first nylon ever on the market, that I inherited from a woman I interviewed on an oral history project (rest in peace, Goldie). Stockings should actually be silk for the 20s. But you know what I nailed other than this c*nty walk? Hair: done with pin curl set called a skip wave and Marcel wave clips (antique!).

It could always be FARBier folks so I hope you’re all just having fun. :-)

You should also throw some dirt in your car. Just you know, all over. Archaeologist is actually one of the easiest Halloween costumes ever! Scream things like “the Eastern Agricultural Complex!!” for good measure while you’re drinking all of your hosts top-shelf bourbon if you need extra legitimacy.

Archaeologists: we fukking with dog food or what?? The dog food is conveniently single-serve and portable and it apparently has all the protein and micronutrients needed for a shiny coat and healthy diet for a large breed over 60lbs. I’m over 60 lbs.🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Follow me for unfiltered archaeology and maybe also pet food recs for human consumption depending on how this goes. #archaeology #realindianajones #archaeologist #doglife #cuisine by @dr_archaeology

Attention Brazilian (I think) archaeologists and sanitation specialists: please disclose trash stats for the average residential unit!! Also, confirm or disconfirm my hypothesis that the raised trash situations are due to dogs. Archaeology is basically the study of garbage, things intentionally and unintentionally added to the archaeological record. We love trash. Some of us like me even do garbology, the study of modern social life through our own trash using archaeological methods. “You don’t need to look at that blunt wrapper,” friends scream at me in public. Oh, but I do. Oh, but I do.

WANNA BE AMERICAN AF?? Here’s some nasty legislation you can oppose for the good of us all! A permitting reform bill moving through the Senate (S. 5653) would neuter Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and make community consultation optional for many federal projects.
The Trump admin is actively trying to destroy our history to build stuff we didn’t sign up for. This bill is also gonna trash other federal laws like the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act and more.
Tell your Senators: Protect community voices and historic places. Oppose the bill and demand meaningful changes to its historic preservation provisions.
Get on the @savingplaces website, link in bio, and easily proposition your Senators to stop this BS.

Happy International Archaeology Day! This holiday sacred to all the dirt nerds you know was founded by the Archaeological Institute of America @archaeology_aia and is now an international day of public education and fun events! I hope you are all celebrating by digitizing family photos, asking your elderly loved ones about life when they were young, playing outside in the dirt, mending all your broken dishes, and burying trash in your yard for my colleagues to find later.

Adobe Stock Photos Pt. 8: a collection of bananas photographs tagged “archaeologist.” I would like to offer this model a field tech job on my next project because if she can handle the discomfort of working with this photographer, she’s gonna be just fine on heavy brush survey in 98 degree heat. Hit me up, girl.

TEACHING ARCHAEOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL PART TWO: I beg of you, don’t no one die here.

Teaching field school is constantly telling people that counter to their perception, they either do or do not need to go to the ER.
