This year, I started writing, designing, producing and performing (not to mention painting, animating and coding) my sci-fi series "Tales from the Fray".

I've always loved imagining stories and the strange, weird and wonderful places they might take place. I spent a year developing a way to make a live, animated, entirely handpainted universe, complete with my main character Arii, voiced by me! Viewers on Twitch can interact with the story as it unfolds and can now even directly manipulate it using commands in the chat. Think of it as a mix between a painting, Doctor Who and Dungeons and Dragons :D

Arii travels using her "Nexus Machine", which allows her to traverse the underside of Universe, the Fray; a plane where all the causal connections between events and entities in the Universe are manifest.

It's been a true labour of love; every aspect takes pain-staking care and attention to detail. I even learnt how to code in Unreal Engine and turn it into a live-streamable platform for my stories!

I can't think of any piece of work that defines my creativity and my drive to always chase the impossible in my art.

"Falling Away" - mixed media on wood panel.

In recovery, I still feel like I'm falling away sometimes, leaving a negative impression of myself behind; a featureless silhouette.

I created the negative space figure using sand; a form that's left an impression in the dust.

Interface explores my transition from hospitalisation, following an acute mental health episode, back into a life that will be necessarily different. Inspired by the theme of “A View from Everywhere”, the stages of my recovery are illustrated as a series of ephemeral figures (sketched using relief paste), each attempting to lift each other from the depths of despondency and towards a new equilibrium. Each figure represents myself trying to navigate a complex space, where every step has a different perspective and trajectory, while also being equally tenuous.

The figures in the piece are embedded in deep surroundings. The name of this artwork also refers to the interfaces of media separated by layers of resin, creating complex textural environments, shaped in part by each figure’s unique form and placement.

Every location across this piece offers a unique blend of structural, textural and colour work, as each place across the artwork represents a different part of recovery and the perspective that stage brings. The complexity surrounding the inhabitants inevitably draws you inwards and towards their melding perspectives.

Finding a stable equilibrium in this vibrant mire is seemingly impossible. Within the piece, however, are a small number of cubic nodes, representing the small number of immutable grounding forces that can stabilise the flailing figures. Each perspective puts another grounding node in sight; a path that can only be seen once the figures choose to reach for it. by @dr_hogarth_does

Finally finished my submission to ArtEvol at the Saatchi Gallery!

This is a larger and more experimental version of another piece I made called Interface, exploring the transition from falling into despair towards hope. This piece emphasises how much you have to keep picking yourself up towards hope and how precarious that transition can be. Each part of that upward journey can send you crashing straight back down.

ArtEvol is about experimenting with media. Interface 2 is comprised of layers of mixed media, forming countless interfaces separated by layers of resin.
