Complex bite. Complex spaces.

The hardest part of a case like this isn’t the shade — it’s deciding where the space goes.

Uneven spacing and a bite with limited room dictate everything downstream: tooth proportions, where the contact points sit, how much can be added before the bite starts taking load it shouldn’t. Get the distribution wrong and you get black triangles, over-contoured teeth, or restorations under forces they weren’t designed for.

Then there’s the tissue. Emergence profile is the part patients never hear about and the part that decides whether this still looks like teeth in five years. Too bulky at the margin and the gum inflames. Too flat and the papilla won’t fill the space. The contour has to support the tissue, not push it.

Planning that takes longer than the treatment does.

Before and after images taken approximately 4 weeks apart.

If you have been thinking about improving your smile before your wedding, start the conversation at least 12 months out.

Of course we want your teeth looking good on the day. The wedding is one day though, and you will have these teeth for a lot longer. So the aim is work that is planned to last well beyond the photos.

That is what the time is for. The more of it we have, the less pressure there is, and the more room there is to plan properly and do things in the right order.

The video runs through how the year usually looks. Save it for your planning list, or send it to someone who just got engaged.

"Perfect" is a myth.

Nothing in nature is perfectly symmetrical. Faces aren't, and neither are the smiles we find most beautiful.

Look closely at natural teeth and you'll see:
• Edges that let a little light through
• Soft texture across the surface
• A slight difference in shape from one tooth to the next
• Colour that's warmer at the gum and lighter at the tip

In dentistry this is called characterisation. It's the reason a smile looks alive and not manufactured. Take those details away and you get teeth that are too white, too even and too flat, and people notice straight away, even if they can't say why.

When we design a smile, we build those details back in on purpose. A little variation, a little translucency. We make it suit your face, your age and your features.

The small imperfections are what make a smile beautiful.

Ten months. That was the entire treatment window. He came in with his daughter's wedding already on the calendar and a simple brief: do it properly, and be finished in time.

Nine of those ten months were aligner treatment. That left one month to restore, which is exactly why the sequence had to be decided before anything started.

Worn edges cannot be rebuilt in the right proportion while the teeth are still in the wrong position, so alignment came first and had to finish with enough runway left to finish the case.

Three planning notes:

Align first. Nine months of aligners put the teeth where the chipped and worn incisal edges could be rebuilt to proper width to length proportions, instead of camouflaged.

Gum levels next. Uneven gingival zeniths will undo good bonding. Correcting the levels before restoring is what makes the final proportions read as even.

Bond last. Additive composite on the upper four to rebuild the lost edges.

The before and after images were taken ten months apart.

Ten months is not long for a case like this. It works when the order is set on day one rather than improvised visit by visit.

Designing a smile isn’t guesswork. It’s a process.

We start with photos, scans and a full set of records, then map out your new smile digitally before we touch a tooth. The best part? You get to test drive it. A trial smile placed right over your own teeth, so you can see it, feel it and love it before we proceed.

See it first. Then decide. That’s smile design done properly.

Rebuilding a worn and canted upper arch isn't one procedure. It's multiple, sequenced.

This case combined implant surgery and restoration, crowns and veneers across the upper arch. The preparations are mixed because each tooth started somewhere different: some structurally compromised and needing full coverage, one site edentulous, others with enough sound enamel left for an additive veneer. Matching the restoration to the substrate is what keeps sound tissue sound.

The planning order mattered more than the material choice. Where the incisal edges and midline needed to sit was settled first. Shade and surface texture were decided last, once the framework was set.

Worth noting: generalised wear rarely presents on its own. Assess the cause before restoring the effect.
