Grateful doesn't even begin to cover it. D Magazine just featured my return as band director for the Nu Soul of the South at South Oak Cliff High School, and getting to see this story told is a full circle moment I don't take lightly.

From building TSMAC to now stepping back onto the field where it all started for me, this feature captures a chapter I'm proud of.

"This school means so much to me. It's where I grew as a leader."

Thank you D Magazine for telling this story. 🙏🏾

Some roads lead you somewhere new. This one brought me home.

I'm truly honored to return to South Oak Cliff High School as the Director of Bands, home of the legendary Nu Soul of the South.

This school means so much to me. It's where I grew as a leader, where I learned what hard work and excellence really look like, and where I had the privilege of watching students become confident young leaders.

Coming back isn't something I take lightly. It's an opportunity to give back to the place that gave so much to me, and I'm ready to pour everything I have into these students, their families, our alumni, and this community.

To every mentor who guided me, every student who trusted me, and everyone who believed in me along the way, thank you. I wouldn't be here without you.

At the end of the day, this has never been about me. It's about the students. It's about building leaders, creating opportunities, and continuing the legacy of excellence at South Oak Cliff.

Let's get to work. The best is still ahead.

Swipe through, and if you know a student who belongs in this band, registration is now open. 💛🐻

Still in awe. I had the absolute honor of meeting Ms. @oprah Winfrey in person. Yes, the Oprah, and hearing her drop some truly life-giving wisdom. At one point, she grabbed me by the hand and said, “Come closer”… y’all, I still haven’t recovered lol.

To stand alongside giants like Bishop TD Jakes, @uwontbutdevwill Devin Wilmott Johnson, and @thelifeoftrl Trelle Johnson was a blessing beyond words. God is opening doors, aligning hearts, and confirming purpose. I’m just grateful for the assignment to serve His people and build real, authentic relationships.

We’re just getting started. Stay tuned. More divine moments ahead. 🙏🏽🔥✨

THE BAND DIRECTOR IS PICKING UP THE HORN. 🎺

On Sunday, October 18, I’m playing trumpet live with @unfadedbrassband at the @statefairoftx!

Every day I’m in the band hall with my students at South Oak Cliff, building TSMAC and leading musicians. But I’m still a musician too. When I ask my students to show up prepared and give the audience everything they’ve got, I want to be doing the same thing.

📍 Bud Light Stage, State Fair of Texas
🎺 Sets at 1 PM | 3 PM | 5 PM | 7:30 PM

Dallas, come see us live! Bring the family. 🎶

Episode 62: Trusting the Process When It Doesn’t Make Sense.

Your future isn’t built on a single breakthrough but in the quiet daily discipline. When what God is doing does not add up, do not abandon the vision, just build the obedience that moves before confirmation.

Today I get to share my story with the Dallas ISD Construction Services team at their Quarterly Meeting.

A kid from La Marque with a trumpet and a big dream. There were plenty of times I wanted to walk away, but I never did. I'm grateful for the chance to talk about foundation, faith, and growth with a team that builds for our students every day.

And yes, I'm bringing my horn. 🎺

Opportunity can change what a young person believes is possible.

For students at South Oak Cliff, every new experience, connection, and room they walk into expands the picture of what their future can look like. That is the kind of access TSMAC is working to create, not just through music, but through exposure, mentorship, leadership, and real-world opportunities.

As Dr. William D. Allen says, “The more you put in front of them, the more they start thinking, ‘I could do that too.’”

That belief can be the beginning of everything.

Episode 60: You’re Tired, But You’re Not Done.

Your future isn’t built on a single breakthrough but in the quiet daily discipline. When your strength is tested and you feel drained, do not abandon the vision, just build the endurance that carries you through the stretch.

My first year at South Oak Cliff, we took the band down to Galveston for a Mardi Gras parade. A lot of those kids had never been outside of Dallas.

One of my students is looking out at the water and says, "Why is that building moving?"

I said that's not a building, that's a cruise ship.

She'd never seen one. And why would she? There's no cruise ships in Dallas, let alone Oak Cliff.

That stuck with me. These kids aren't short on talent, they're short on people showing them what's out there. The more you put in front of them, the more they start thinking I could do that too.

That's a big part of why I'm back at SOC, and it's what we're building with TSMAC.

Thanks to FOX 4 for having me on The Post.
