After 8 incredible years by my side, my amazing dental assistant, Hortensia, is beginning a very special new chapter. ❤️ While I am incredibly sad to see her go, I couldn’t be happier for her. She is following her dream and will be joining the church full-time — and I am so proud of her. Hortensia has been so much more than a dental assistant. She has been an important part of my journey, my patients’ journeys, and the culture we have built together. The short video above is her story, in her own words. And now, as one chapter closes, another begins… I’m looking for an exceptional dental assistant to join my team. Privileged to be invited to lecture to the final year dental and hygienist students at the University of the Western Cape. 🙏 Thank you for having me. I qualified 45 years ago. Standing in front of a room of students about to start their own careers has a way of putting that into perspective — and reminding you how much has changed since you were sitting where they are. The topic was AI in dentistry — where it’s already making a genuine difference, and where it’s heading next. It’s a conversation I care about deeply, because the profession I trained into and the profession these students are walking into are not the same one. That’s not something to be nervous about. It’s something to get ahead of. Sharing what I’ve learned over a long, rewarding career with the people who’ll be shaping the next one is exactly the kind of full-circle moment that makes this work worth it. To the UWC class — it’s a privileged profession. Take care of your patients, stay curious, and don’t be afraid of where the technology is going. It’s going to make you better at this, not replace what makes you good at it. Two cases. Two materials. Two very different patients — and both right. Swipe through both transformations: one ceramic veneer case, one resin veneer case. They’re often talked about like competitors. They’re not. They solve different problems for different people. Ceramic veneers: → A different material entirely — stronger, more stain-resistant, built to last → Lower maintenance over time → Requires minimal preparation of the natural tooth → Higher investment Resin veneers: → Completely non-invasive — no drilling of the tooth required → Ideal for younger patients, or anyone who isn’t ready for a permanent change → More affordable → Needs more upkeep and maintenance over time Neither one is the “better” veneer. The better veneer is the one that’s right for the patient in front of you. That decision comes down to four things: cost, age, invasiveness, and the aesthetic result you’re after. A 19-year-old who wants a conservative, reversible option is not the same case as someone ready for a long-term, durable investment — and treating them the same way would be the wrong call in both directions. The future of dentistry is no dentistry. Not because teeth stop mattering. Because disease never gets the chance to start. Here’s what nobody in this profession wants to say out loud: only 7% of dental spending — going all the way back to 1977 — has ever gone to prevention. Almost 50 years later, that hasn’t moved. We built an entire industry to treat disease, and never bothered finishing the half that prevents it. A “checkup” that only looks for decay isn’t measuring your health. It’s waiting for something to go wrong so it can finally be named. There’s no baseline. No tracking. No signal until damage has already been done — and by then, you’re paying for it twice: once in dollars, once in tooth structure you never get back. This is the model most of dentistry still runs on. Find something. Fix it. Bill for it. Repeat. Call it care. It isn’t. Real care means measuring what’s healthy before it isn’t — tracking it, scoring it, watching it the same way you’d watch any other vital sign. That’s what COHA was built to do.
