DUCK POND HISTORY 🦆 Duck Pond was built in 1927 when the school was called Appalachian State Normal School. The campus changed over the years, but the pond stayed. The university once thought about filling it in to make more parking, but that never happened. Ducks were added to the pond in the 1950s. In 1987, the area was named Tomlinson Park after Rebecca Tomlinson, an App State professor who helped improve the area. In 1994, App State fans threw the football goal posts into the pond after a big win over Marshall. In 2018, a floating shelter was added to protect the ducks. The Duck Pond is also a retention pond, which means it helps the environment by collecting dirt, trash, and pollution from water. In 2027, the Duck Pond will be 100 years old. It continues to connect App State students from different generations. by @draba.boone

BLACK CAT 🐈‍⬛ FOR SALE: @blackcatboone has been slinging burritos for over 25 years and Boone wouldn’t be the same without this hole-in-the-wall!! Black Cat opened on September 26, 2000 and has weathered economic recessions, global pandemics, and a hurricane. The owner, Joseph Miller, said anyone seriously interested in obtaining this business can contact him directly at admin@blackcatburrito.com for details. He also said “We’ve had a lot of very special years here and some of the best memories of our lives. It is just time for us to move on to other opportunities and very important that Black Cat is set up for success in the future. It just feels like the right time for us and we are very appreciative we got to be a part of this place’s history. This will be a great opportunity for someone. Cheers and so much love to this community.” Here’s hoping this beloved Boone staple finds the right new owner. NEW TACO BELL COMING TO BOONE! 🌮 The old @tacobell building at 📍1093 Blowing Rock Road has been demolished to make way for a brand-new Taco Bell (not a Taco Bell Cantina). 🌮 The new restaurant will feature: ✨ Two indoor dining rooms ☀️ A covered outdoor patio for additional seating 🚗 A redesigned drive-thru to improve traffic flow and service 🛣️ Two site entrances, including one full-access driveway Construction is now underway, with the new Taco Bell expected to reopen in early 2027. 📸 Kara Harmon by @draba.boone

ELEVEN 80 EATERY 🚫 NOW CLOSED: Eleven80 Eatery located inside the Boone Mall has permanently closed after approximately nine years. The restaurant, which opened in 2017, brought a casual upscale atmosphere to Boone Mall and became known for its burgers, flatbreads, cocktails. While no detailed public statement outlining the exact reasons for the closure has been released, the loss of Eleven80 leaves yet another vacancy inside the Boone Mall. The closure also marks another longtime Boone restaurant shutting its doors, something many locals say is part of a growing trend impacting Boone and the High Country food scene. by @draba.boone
