Bathers in The Zone
Oil on paper (monotype), 18” x 24”
2026

“The Zone” is a reference to the mystical science fiction wildland of Tarkovsky’s “Stalker”. My Bather Monotypes and paintings harken to some traditional influences: the dreamy feminine ideal of Renoir, otherworldly fantasies of Proust (referenced in the frequent title “Seascape With Frieze of Girls”), primordial bathers of Cézanne, ancient frescoes of Crete. They have also come to celebrate the women resisting Russian occupation in Ukraine under the auspices of Zla Mavka, a female spirit in Ukrainian folklore and mythology. The image source material (Instagram and internet erotica) and the method of stenciling both positive and negative spaces explore tensions between control (fame, self-determination) and lack of control (coercion, slavery, exploitation) in contemporary sexualized imagery. The series was born out of the combined forces of anxiety revolving around aging and vulnerable LGBTQ parents, and an appreciation of contemporary ideals of love, sex and beauty. The visual intent is to locate the models, or their fictionalized selves, in a beautiful, primordial, safe dream-space. However, the images often result in a charged psychological interrelationship or carry a sense of loss, alienation or isolation.
