Hi, I’m Dr. Ashanté M. Reese— food studies scholar, and expert gatherer of people, stories, recipes, and traditions.

The GATHER journey has changed me forever.

I started with a research question. I ended with a deeper understanding that many of the practices we need to create justice are already being cultivated in our homes, backyards, and neighborhood parks.

Now I get to share this with you in book form:

Gather: Black Food, Nourishment, and the Art of Togetherness, coming from Norton on April 14.

Pre-order it anywhere you get books. 🌿

Stay tuned for tour dates! Let me know in the comments where you’d like to gather. by @dramreese

🚨 I have the privilege of being the FIRST person to reveal the cover for GATHER, a vibrant new vision of food justice that celebrates Black food and recognizes the power of gathering to create sustainable, systemic change.

In this book, anthropologist @dramreese argues for a new vision of food justice. One that centers the resilience of Black communities and argues that community nourishment deserves as much consideration as individual health.

Highlighting four spaces of gathering—gardens, family reunions, repasts, and protests —Reese offers rich, on–the–ground studies of the places and people who make up the food justice movement. From Black church networks and community farms to student protests, these studies illuminate ways we can challenge structures of power and nourish ourselves, body and soul. In a world of social isolation and unequal food systems, GATHER offers a compelling argument for the beauty and political power of togetherness.

GATHER is on sale April 14, 2026, but you can pre-order it via @dramreese or me! 🔗👆🏾

Sometimes it takes nearly a year to meet your friends in real life.

In the spring, I finished a coaching certification with @wholeheartedcoaching (SN: if you’re thinking about coaching, this program is wonderful. ask me about it!)

For six months, our cohort met virtually, coached each other, learned together, shared our life things, lamented over starting businesses. And in the six months since, we continue to do those things and call each other friends.

Seeing Ryleigh and Valerie in real life brought me so much joy. Thank you for coming to my talk!

Swipe to see when I met Shirin, the incredible mastermind behind wholehearted coaching, in Brooklyn and my soul sister Marquita in Atlanta!

This spring, I was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, one of the highest honors at UT-Austin.

In a moment when my department has been eliminated, when the state is aggressively attacking the kinds of things I teach, this kind of honor is bittersweet.

I know what courses that push you to think critically about the world can do. They’re transformative, both for students and for teachers like me.

It’s a joy to watch students develop the tools to fight for a better world, and I’ll never take for granted the change that is possible.

I wish the circumstances during which I received this honor were different. But perhaps what matters most is that it reminds me that liberatory teaching matters and is so critically necessary right now.

👯🏾‍♀️ Cool fact: @drashleydfarmer was inducted three years ago! Swipe to see our sister certificates! by @dramreese

I had a lovely time at the @petersburgbookfest.

A great panel discussion with @beronda_m and @lauranettlee talking about Gather and When Trees Testify. (We really missed @freckledwhileblack, who got stuck with airplane delays!)

I was impressed by the festival’s organization and welcoming vibes and hope to be back in the future! taken in Petersburg, Virginia by @dramreese
