Good day, I hope everyone has been well! Today I have a preview for the next commission I'll be posting about, which I completed last year. I really gave myself a challenge with this composition xD Both the character (a shape-shifting criminal mastermind) and the client I worked with were quite enigmatic (the name they went by was 𒀻 𒀼 𒀽 𒀾 𒀿 𒁀 𒁁 𒁂), but they were an absolute pleasure to work with! Good morning evening or afternoon! This is an old sketch I did a while ago, and I just realised I haven't posted it to instagram yet! It took around 10m (and it's very low resolution I know lol), from experimenting with some personal photography combined with impasto brushes. Some of my personal worldbuilding takes place in a sci-fi setting, and this is one of the first paintings I did for it so it is quite precious to me. #krita #digitalarts #spaceopera A sci-fi plaza under an oppressive, polluted sky lit beige by the lights below. The final cover reveal is upon us!! Today is Lost Logion (@robertoscribner for links and pre-orders). I spent a lot of time developing her branch weapon and after some discussions we settled on this sinister design. The tree sap mirrors and mingles with her blood, and some of the spikes pierce through and out her hand as the vines envelop her hand and forearm. 🌿 Also, the green leaves are a nod to her emerald eye in the first cover. Fun fact: Lost Logion is the first portrait I started with! Malhela's face design underwent a lot of changes. When I first started the commission my instinct was to draw her in a traditionally beautiful way. Then Roberto said something that stuck with me: "It's really, really important that she not be pretty for several reasons, because I think we do a real disservice to humanity when all our heroes are presented as physically attractive, as if that is part of their heroic nature, but my a big theme in my book is that outward appearance has nothing to do with heroism at all." WOW RIGHT? :DI think that was the moment I began to truly understand the commission and it made me really excited about painting Malhela. I went back to the drawing board and tried out all sorts of unconventional features to get her exactly right. Later on (for Silent Canto) I had a huge breakthrough on painting realism. Today is the reveal for the 3rd book, Star Abyss! (@robertoscribner for links) This is one I am very proud of :DI added as much movement as I could with the flowing hair, even the saliva to emphasise her fury and intensity. I knew what I wanted for Star Abyss right from the beginning! As you can see in the early concept art, the war scream was pretty settled for this cover. I've also included the very early paintings for Glamor Lost and Silent Canto for comparison! It was for this portrait I re-designed the eyes to be the yellow you see now! Even though her eyes are more brown in the story, I felt a very pale colour would be best for readability. Half-way through, we needed to decide her hairstyle. I painted some options and Roberto gave me lots of feedback so we could get her design exactly right. Today Silent Canto has been revealed! @robertoscribner for reel and pre-orders💜 For SC, I did a large amount of research to get the right expression of grief by going through a lot of war photography for reference. I also researched the spear design! It's based on a 19th century Zulu ndebele thrusting spear, because of their versatility. Half-way through I had a huge breakthrough about how to paint realistic skin. If you paint the light catching on the wrinkles, it suddenly looks very true-to-life. I realised this when I stopped thinking about the skin as a simple surface or "just micro-detailing", but rather as a 3D object unto itself. Today is the cover reveal for Glamor Lost!! You can pre-order at https://www.chroniclesofperimet.com or straight from @robertoscribner's profile link. The website also has all the sketches (and even more!) live, alongside lore about the world. We are going to go over some behind-the-scenes for today :D Malhela's gold skin is a story and a half lol. I used Blender to understand how to paint it - but only after literal weeks of struggling. I highly recommend anyone to mock-up stuff in 3D if you get stuck! Her charred side was also going to be a lot darker and horror-inspired. However, we felt it wasn't the right signal for the front cover, so I scaled back it to something more gentle and abstract. I've also included a WIP render so you can see how it developed! If you have any questions do post them! I'm happy to ramble about everything and this was painted in Krita.
