VONLAYS - RESIN BONDING

YOU ASKED about how to bond these…

As the name suggests, the bonding protocols are the same as for veneers and onlays. Prepare the tooth in the conventional manner, based on your type of bonding agent.
For silica-based materials, the typical protocol is HF acid etching, silane, and composite.
For the latter, you can use light-cure resin composite cement (unless your restorations are thicker than 2 mm or so…) or restorative composite. When using restorative composite, you want to change the viscosity by heating and using an ultrasonic instrument for insertion. However, make sure you are using a product that will get thin enough with this protocol (not all composites do and then you will have heck of a time adjusting occlusion…

VONLAYS - MATERIAL SELECTION AND THICKNESS

YOU ASKED and here is some research and manufacturer recommendations…
Many people equal “material thickness” to “tooth reduction”. But no, amount of tooth reduction depends on your wax up/digital design. Only prep as much as absolutely necessary! If you, for example, increase the VDO by 2 mm, you don’t have to prep ANYTHING occlusally (maybe just remove undercuts and rough spots).

HOW TO PROVISIONALIZE VONLAYS???

…was a frequent question about the recent post series on vonlays.
Here you go step-by-step…! A preferred technique is the “spot-etch/spot-bond” technique we also use for veneers, combined with the „stamp“ or „injection moulding“ technique. You can also use prefabricated printed or milled provisionals but have to likely reline them.
Of course there are many other options, just make sure not to damage your preps during the process…
