Ever since he was a child, Antonio Webb had to find it in himself to overcome what promised to be a very desolate future.

Growing up in the heart of Shreveport, Louisiana, he was constantly surrounded by influences of the very worst sort including gangs, violence and drugs.

From a younger brother who served juvenile life for armed robbery, to a mother whose addiction to drugs landed her in jail multiple times and eventually shot and paralyzed from the waist down, Antonioโ€™s family was split in half between members in and out of prison. Not only that, but several of his close friends were killed and others began serving 10+ years in prison for crimes they committed as teenagers.

Based on his own life story, Overcoming the Odds documentary, details the miraculous account of a boy who became more than anyone ever thought possible. From the rough streets of Louisiana to becoming a Board Certified Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, the documentary realistically portrays the heartache and desperate challenges it took to rise above his austere beginnings.

More importantly, it echoes his personal belief that there is an incredible, undeniable strength in every person to overcome the odds.

My 15 year journey to become a board certified orthopedic spine surgeon was quite the feat. My career started off in the military where I spent 8 years working as a medic, LVN, and EMT-B including a tour right outside of Baghdad, Iraq in 2005. While on active duty, I went to college at night and on the weekends to complete my pre-med prerequisites. It ended up taking me 7 yrs to get my bachelors degree, but I kept at it until I finished! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ

This was followed by a challenging course to get into medical school - rejected for two years straight from every school that I applied to. Eventually, I was accepted into medical school after a postbac program at Georgetown University. This was followed by 6 years of surgical training at 2 programs which were very trauma heavy (which was good because it prepared me for practice).

And now, Ive been in practice for 4 years. Everyday, I have to pinch myself to remind myself how far Iโ€™ve come and what I had to go through to get to this point. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

Nipsey said it best when he said,
โ€œIโ€™m about seeing long-term, seeing a vision, understanding nothing really worthwhile happens overnight, and just sticking to your script long enough to make something real happen.โ€

A father at 15. Raised in a crack house. Now a surgeon at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. James Harrisโ€™s story is about more than becoming a doctor. Itโ€™s about second chances, the mentor who saw a future he couldnโ€™t see, and the faith that carried him through his hardest moments.

Your past is part of your story. It doesnโ€™t have to be the ending.

Being a spine surgeon is about more than operating. Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is pull up a chair, listen, and let patients know their concerns matter. taken in San Antonio, Texas by @drantoniowebbmd
