LOGO LIFE: My name is Aaron James Draplin, I am 52 years old and a graphic designer working out of Portland, Oregon. And man, I love logos.

Ever since I can remember. All the way back to that Bicentennial logo in the summer of ’76, to Lego tiles, to BMX pads, to skateboard stickers, to band t-shirts, to discovering the modernist legends, and finally, rescuing long-forgotten graphic treasures from the American underbelly. Those are my favorite, cuz real people made them, often to no fanfare.

Before going apeshit and adding my own @logoarchive study into the mix, I have just been watching from afar, and LOVING seeing all the work flickering out there in my feed. SO MANY BANGER COLLECTIONS out there!

Some of my faves have been @wallvscrayon, @coombs.design, @jgspdx, @okpants, @patrykhardziej, @thecreativepain, @zalo.estevez, @hank_makes, @jasonthe29th, @mikesmith, @bennygold, @designerrichardbaird, @piedmontbrandco, @hellomuller, @bucket826, @garasigrafis, @barnardco, @staygrayponyboy, @tyfrisbee, and holy shit, the brilliance of @markusdaum_logos!

So I did my first collection, going after the big gigs, or, marks that are still going 20+ years later! (Ahem, @unionbindingco!) And of course, that spilled out into personal stuff, things I did for buddies, animals, suns and even scraped the bottom to get some weirdo scabs from the DDC logo graveyard. Before I knew it, it turned into eleven of them. Had to show them all!

01. DDC “Professional” Logos
02. DDC “Personal” Logos
03. DDC “Friends, Fun & Free” Logos
04. DDC “Nothing & Nonsense” Logos
05. DDC “Animal” Logos
06. DDC “Nature” Logos
07. DDC “Sun” Logos
08. DDC “Heart” Logos
09. DDC “Arrow” Logos
10. DDC “D” Logos
11. DDC “Graveyard” Logos

If you are feeling so inclined, please check my “Logos” section on draplin.com. Stuff going back to 1999! So proud of each and every one of them. Thankful for the work, and to have had a life making logos for a living, and, for the love of it!

New for Fall - the “Hunter’s Moon” edition, captured here by @lucaszfitz.

Inspired in part by Ted Kooser’s lovely poem, “Abandoned House,” artist Laura Weiler (@cutandplaced) created the dream-like artwork spanning across covers of both books using a unique gel plate method of monoprinting, layering collaged images, inks, and paints that are pressed and then transferred to paper.

ONLY TOOK ME SEVENTEEN YEARS: With my summer’s worth of projects, travel and hoochery finally being wrapped up (-ish), founad myself with a whole Saturday before me to focus on long overdue domestic duties.

Back in 2010 I got a door for the front of the house. Big, solid beast. Cost me a cool $3000! From Edelen Door here in Portland. They installed it in a day, and left the premises with all the moulding unfinished. When the rep made the follow-up call to make sure I was happy with the job I asked, “So when are they are coming back to paint the trim?” And without missing a beat the guy said, “Oh, we don’t do that. That’s up to you.” And that was that. Real cool. Goddammit.

So some 17 years later I finally got around to doing it. And by “I” I should revise that one to a hard “We,” as my co-pilot, apprentice-in-training, second-in-command, Assistant Regional Manager to the Regional Manager @leighola77 was the hard-hitting, relentless project manager who pushed me over the edge—into near unbearable insanity—and WE AS A TEAM finally got the fucking thing painted, spliffed, miffed, whiffed and spiffed.

DILPs! (Doors I’d like to paint.) (And did paint.)

Even hung those fancy house numbers. Bought those little fuckerfaces back in 2012 or something. Just a mere 14 years ago. Basically 1/4 of my half-ass life ago.

Smooth moves, Exlax! (Talking to myself, there.)

Smoove moves, Leigh Leigh. (Talking to my co-pilot, apprentice-in-training, second-in-command, Assistant Regional Manager to the Regional Manager Leigh, there.)

DEEP IN A PROJECT ON A SATURDAY: And I can take an exit ramp, check the Instagrizz part of town and see this book cover around a corner, sent in from one @jesseharding out in Nebraska. Thank you, Sir. Incredible moves!

Check those droplets! Pretty wicked. Dang. And some nasty Kabel Black going down. Equally as wicked.

Alright...back to this Southern Rock project. Can’t say anything else as these words go to print. But when I can, I’ll say it loud and fucking proud, “I got to roll my sleeves up for the fuckin’ ⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️ and the ⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️!!!”

Can you believe it? I can't, but my IPAD CERTAINLY CAN. Been drawing up a storm on this fucker.

Anyhoo, thank you Jesse Harding! Appreciated!

AFTERBURNING: Been listening to the shit out of the new Lambchop “Punching the Clown” record while making pages for a fantastic magazine project we’re not at liberty to discuss just yet.

Been a Lambchop fan back to those early ’00s, out of my love for the “Y’Alternative’ bands from the mid-to-late-’90s. (Son Volt, Wilco, Richard Buckner, Old 97s…) Kept hearing about Lambchop, heard this collaboration with Josh Rouse called, “Chester” and soon after got to “Nixon” a couple months after the millennium ticked over.

Fast forward to an afternoon in Nashville in 2017 when I got to meet Kurt Wagner, right at his house. Simply due to our love of bad hats, and a special connection by one very cool Mary Mancini, his lovely wife. We talked about hats, records, dogs, Nashville, and, Lambchop’s record art.

I remember him telling me how he’d have his friend(s) over to the house—figure out some kind of a meal to share—and get down to work on the new record. And that’s how it went for Lambchop, all the way back the first record.

I remember this being very touching. His commitment to their ongoing collaboration, and all the beautiful output over the years, which FEELS LIKE THE BAND. Exactly what it’s supposed to do.

You HAVE to listen to “Making Ways” podcast’s incredible “The Art of Lambchop” episode. Kurt and Craig tell their story about how they work. Found it beyond fascinating.

And thank you Mr. Goodman for that peek under such a magical hood!

Yay, Lambchop! Yay, New Formalists! Yay, records!
