Welp, we’ve made it to 8th grade, ya’ll! 😩🤗 Aiden is such a cool kid. He loves playing video games, hanging out with his friends, animals and jumping into large bodies of water 💦 (swipe to see 😆). I honestly can’t believe I’ve kept this child alive for 14 years. Never easy, but always worth it. Shout out to all the single parents out there holding it down! 💯🤩

Aiden wrote me a letter today thanking me for taking care of him for 14 years and that he’s got enough love for me to fill the Earth 67 times over. 💫 Being his mom has been the greatest blessing of my life and there’s never enough words to describe how grateful I am to God for choosing me to do it. After witnessing my hooding ceremony last week, he said “When I get my PhD…” which made every single worry I’ve ever had about whether I’m doing this whole parenting thing right melt away. I love that he can see his future in me.💙😭 Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and caretakers out there!

Oh, nothing…just out here manifesting degrees. 😎🎓Aiden starts sixth grade in the Fall and is working on a research paper this summer about two of his favorite topics: WWII & The Cold War. Of course, he wants to go to SMU for college. I always tell him he can attend whatever college he wants to as long he puts his mind to it (which he obviously is). 💯 I just finished my (last!!!) residency requirement in my PhD program and currently studying for my Qualifying Exams that I’ll take in the Fall. (ABD….let’s gooo!) So, if you see me outside this summer, just know I’m taking a (much-needed) study break. 😆🤓📚

We made it to sixth grade, ya’ll!!! Aiden is officially a middle schooler. 🎉 This year, he’ll dive back into the gifted and talented program and even some advanced classes. 🤓 I know every parent says this on the first day of school, but I honestly can’t even believe it. What a semester! Got to love on some of my favorite students at graduation today and even completed my own graduation (!!!) last week. 💖 I’m also excited to serve on the board for @smubfsa. Lots of highs, always some lows, but through it all, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to teach every single student in each of my classes. I know they all will go on to do great things. ✨ I’m also grateful to each of my own professors for always believing in me. I can’t wait to put all of my new knowledge to work! 🤓 by @drarterbery

Aiden is officially 13 years old today and all I can think about is how my baby/little boy is officially a teenager now and that time is a whole entire thief. 🤩 He has the best sense of humor (we laugh all the time!), loves playing video games and reading history books. 🤓 I love him to pieces…even when he’s getting on my nerves lol. God is good. ✨

Because I wasn't even going to the game since I couldn't get my faculty tickets which were gone in 10 minutes but the athletics department came through for me and WE WON!!! That’s a wrap on the Spring 2025 semester!
No matter how many major bylines I’ve gotten in my writing/editing career absolutely nothing tops seeing the students I’ve taught walk across the stage at graduation + helping them write/edit stories for @smulook magazine. 🤩 I also have the best co-workers! Who knew being a journalism professor could be so fun?! (I still don’t like grading papers, but what professor does?! 🙃)

It’s so fitting that this year’s @smumeadows graduation ceremony (my first!!) was the same weekend as Mother’s Day because you cannot tell me that these amazing students of mine aren’t my children! 😆 I am so grateful for the opportunity to teach them everything I’ve learned working in journalism and I wish all of them the best as they journey into real life adulthood.
