“Between those two kisses stretched a lifetime of love. She went where I could not follow, but I hold to the hope that I will see her again. Until that day, I see her in our children. In their kindness, their determination, their faith, I catch glimpses of Janet, her legacy written into their lives. Surrounded by silence and prayer, I felt her love lifting me, a strength that would carry me forward even as life would never be the same.” -Lifted to Lead

How we see young people shapes how we support them.

In this episode of FutureCurrent, Dr. Bean reflects on the importance of taking an asset-based perspective and recognizing the strengths, potential, and promise young people already carry. It is a meaningful reminder that the way we frame a child’s story can either expand what feels possible or limit it.

A thoughtful conversation about mentorship, belonging, and why it matters to lead with strengths.

When I think about our family I think about the Refiner’s fire. My Bean sprouts have gone through so much. But have come out of the furnace like pure gold.

The latest example, tonight at her graduation, Amelia was named the Departmental Citation given to the top student in the Legal Studies program at Berkeley.

I was completely surprised (Amelia was able to keep it a secret). As tears flowed, memories rushed in of beautiful moments from the day she was born to her happy childhood. Then the flood of gentle grief thinking of what she has been through with the loss of her mother.

In Amelia’s achievement, I saw the faithfulness of God. Through His strength, Amelia showed resilience, purpose, and triumph.

Then I thought of Janet. She loved our kids unconditionally and always believed in them, even during the hard seasons. She would have been so proud watching Amelia receive this honor. So much of Amelia’s strength, kindness, and determination comes from her mom.

Moments like these remind me that none of us makes it through the fire alone. Held by faith, family, and friendship, Amelia has walked through hardship and emerged refined like gold.

Amelia, thank you for staying humble, working hard, and becoming such a thoughtful young woman. Your mom would be smiling as big as I did tonight.

We are so proud of you. Love you to the moon and back. by @drbeanoc

When we focus on people’s strengths, so much becomes possible.

In this episode of FutureCurrent, Dr. Bean reflects on the importance of recognizing and empowering people’s gifts. In Adán’s case, that meant having educators who saw his voice as a strength and created opportunities for him to use it.

It is a meaningful conversation about encouragement, growth, and what can happen when people are supported in what they do well.

Sometimes a single moment reminds us exactly why this work matters.

In this episode of FutureCurrent, Dr. Bean shares a powerful story about visiting juvenile hall, sitting across the table from incarcerated youth, and being reminded in a deeply human way why educators do this work.

This conversation speaks to leadership, relationships, and the importance of seeing the people in front of us with care and curiosity.

No one gets there alone.

That was the message that carried through today’s Orange County State of Education event and it perfectly captures what makes our county special.

Education is never a solo journey. Every student who succeeds does so because of teachers who believe in them, families who support them, community partners who invest in them, and leaders who work together to create opportunity.

And a very special thank you to Adan Correa who inspired us all, reminding us that no one gets there alone!

Here’s the entire video for those who missed it:

It takes a village to support a family, and the GCH village showed up ready to learn and mobilize at our Inaugural Faith Partners Breakfast yesterday.

Leaders from across Orange County and different spiritual backgrounds, both longtime partners and new friends, gathered to connect and collaborate for the betterment of children and families in our community.

Grateful for our keynote speaker, Dr. Stefan Bean, and for Elia Perez, Director of Programs, and Angie Brock, our Warehouse Manager, who shared the heart behind the work. The talented young dancers from the @altaerdancecollective brought such joy and energy to the morning. Thank you to @cornerbakery for the delicious coffee and fruit, @portosbakery for the amazing pastries. and of course, we want to thank our wonderful volunteers for their amazing help!

When community, faith, and purpose come together, real impact happens. 💚

If you’d like to learn more about how to join the GCH community who’s working to combat weekend hunger and uplift local children, check out the link in our bio or email Georgette, our Volunteer and Church Relations Coordinator at volunteers@gchope.org by @drbeanoc
