Everyone asks: “How do I find observerships in the US?”

Wrong question.

The real question is:
How do you get a busy physician to notice you?

I sent dozens of emails that went nowhere.
Not because I wasn’t qualified —
but because I was invisible.

The shift was simple:
I stopped emailing “institutions”
and started reaching out to individuals.

That’s when things started to move.

If you’re an IMG trying to break in, understand this:
Access is not given. It’s built.

Comment “EMAIL” if you want the exact structure I used.

Finding accommodation in the US for an observership can be challenging, especially if it’s your first time in a new city.

Here are 6 methods that have worked for me and many other IMGs:

1️⃣ Airbnb
Best for your first 1–2 weeks while you settle in and explore local housing options.

2️⃣ Furnished Finder
A hidden gem for IMGs. Furnished monthly rentals that are often cheaper than Airbnb and popular with traveling healthcare professionals.

3️⃣ Facebook Community Groups
Search for:
• Housing in [City Name]
• Sublet [City Name]
• Buy & Sell Groups
• Local Community Groups

Many short-term housing opportunities are posted there before they appear elsewhere.

4️⃣ Facebook Marketplace
You can find great deals, but be careful.
Always verify the property, ask for a video tour, and never send money before confirming the listing.

5️⃣ Ask Previous Observers or Your Coordinator
Many hospitals already have informal housing networks and may connect you with previous observers or trusted landlords.

6️⃣ Local Mosques & Community Centers
They often know about affordable, safe accommodation nearby and can connect you with community members who have rooms available.

💡 The best accommodation deals are often found through people, not platforms.

💬 If you’ve completed an observership in the USA, comment:

Your CV should atleast have following things

•Your full name, professional email, phone number (doesnt matter if its US or not)

•Your career objective (tailor it according to the Physicians specialty to whom you are sending it to)

•MBBS, medical school & graduation year
•All your relevant work experiences eg House job, hospital rotations & previous USCE (if any)

•Step 1 status, Step 2 CK score, Step 3 & ECFMG status, always mention this in separate heading
•Research projects, publications & presentations
•Relevant skills, teaching & volunteering activities
•Any certification for example ATLS BLS etc

Before sending make sure its concise (ideally 1–2 pages), use a clean format and save as PDF.
• Be accurate and tailor your CV to the physician. Make separate for separate specialties

💬 Comment “CV” and I’ll send you my exact CV template! 🙌🏻

Many people compare Pediatrics vs Internal Medicine salaries.

I look at it differently.

For me, the USMLE journey and the Match aren’t just about income—they’re about access and opportunity.

The goal is to find the door and walk through it. Once you’re through, you have options: residency, fellowship, research, leadership, entrepreneurship, or simply a better future for your family.

The biggest opportunity isn’t the salary.
It’s the access.

One of the biggest mistakes I see IMGs make is believing they need to secure three or four observerships before coming to the U.S.

I used to think the same way and thats why I searched for them for months before coming to USA

But after starting my first rotation, I realized that every hospital introduced me to new people, new mentors, and new opportunities. The challenge wasn’t finding more observerships—it was having enough time to accept them because I had already committed to my next rotation.

Your first observership is much more than a line on your CV. It’s where you build relationships, learn how the system works, and open doors to opportunities you probably wouldn’t have found from your home country.

That’s exactly what happened to me, and it’s the reason I made this video.

Have you secured your first observership yet? Or are you still looking for one? Let me know in the comments.

If you’d like me to make a detailed video on how I network during my rotations and how those conversations turned into more opportunities, comment “NETWORK.”

There’s still a long way to go and a lot left to achieve.

But sometimes we get so focused on the next goal that we forget to appreciate the things we once prayed, worked, and dreamed for.

A few years ago, places like these were just videos on my Instagram feed. Today, they’re memories on my own camera roll.

The journey is far from over, but every now and then, it’s worth looking back and realizing that some of the things you used to admire from a distance are now part of your life.

Keep moving forward, but don’t forget to appreciate how far you’ve already come.

Please don’t use ChatGPT as a substitute for building your foundational knowledge through textbooks, lectures, or high-quality video resources.

ChatGPT is most effective as a tool for active recall, concept reinforcement, and critical questioning after you’ve developed a solid understanding of the topic. Once you have that foundation, you can use it to test your knowledge, explore concepts more deeply, and even identify instances where the AI may be inaccurate or incomplete.

When used correctly, ChatGPT can significantly enhance your learning. But if you rely on it without first building a strong foundation, it can reinforce misconceptions and ultimately slow your progress.

How to get FREE observerships in the US 🇺🇸

1. Start early, literally a year before you land in the States— opportunities fill fast, so timing matters.
2. Cold emailing works — reach out to hospitals, physicians, and program coordinators professionally.
3. Prepare your CV in advance — keep it updated and tailored.
4. Join specialty-specific groups (Facebook, forums, etc.) — this is where most leads circulate.
5. Get into WhatsApp/online communities of IMGs already in the US, Indians Pakistani, anyone — network smartly.
6. Reach out to seniors and mentors — referrals often open doors faster than applications.
7. Stay consistent — follow up, stay professional, and don’t rely on one method alone.
8. If you are already in the states, show up on clinical practices of physicians and explore if they will allow you to shadow.

Opportunities are rarely “found” — they’re built through persistence and smart networking.

Comment if you have better ways as well, lets grow together

They say you can’t have your heart in two places, but every IMG knows that’s not true. One half is in USA building the dream, and the other is already waiting at the arrivals gate in Lahore. ✈️🇵🇰 🇺🇸
Dubai layovers feel a little less exhausting when you know home is the next stop. Recharging the soul before the next chapter begins.
