I had a wonderful trip to Melbourne, Australia to give 2 presentations at the International Association of Dance Medicine & Science Annual Conference: One on latest pelvic floor research and future directions with my across-the world-colleague @jess.physio (And yes, the title was “Dancer Health Down Under”), and another presentation on translating cross training and periodization concepts to studio practice. I attended some excellent research presentations, learned a lot, and connected with other professionals to dream up some new potential projects. Also got to tour the health facilities for the Australian Ballet as well as the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA). Melbourne is a beautiful city! What a great opportunity to connect with my fellow dance science nerds and get a taste of Australia. @csulbdance taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @drbrookewinderpt

What a wonderful 2 weeks leading “DANC 360: Quantitative Analysis of Injuries” Abroad in London in partnership with the incredible faculty of @trinitylaban_dancescience . Thank you to @catherine__haber for helping me make this possible for our @csulbdance students as well as students from other US universities. We had an amazing adventure that was jam-packed with dance science learning, some wonderful dance and theatre shows, and a chance to explore all the great things London has to offer. These students shared such enthusiasm and curiosity and were a pleasure to mentor. Did you know that your pelvic floor muscles need fuel just like the rest of your body? When dancers or athletes don’t get enough energy it can lead to issues like urinary incontinence 💧

Dr Brooke Winder and Dr Julie Wiebe break down how proper fuelling supports your pelvic health, performance and confidence.

You were told to do Kegels… so why are your symptoms getting worse?

On last week’s episode of @bendy_bodies, I spoke with Dr. Brooke Winder (@drbrookewinderpt) about one of the biggest misconceptions in pelvic health: that strengthening is always the answer.

The pelvic floor isn’t just about strength - it’s about coordination, length, and the ability to relax.

Many symptoms like pelvic pain, painful s*x, urinary urgency, or tampon discomfort are often linked to too much tension, not weakness.

On the other hand, postpartum recovery, pelvic surgery, or nerve-related dysfunction may require targeted strengthening.

And here’s where it gets important: if Kegels are making your symptoms worse, that’s not failure - it’s feedback.

Pelvic floor dysfunction isn’t one-size-fits-all. It requires understanding your body’s unique balance of strength and relaxation.

These conversations matter because so many people are doing the “right” thing - and still feeling worse.

💬 Question for you: Were you ever told to just “do more Kegels”? Did it actually help?

How can you be both hypermobile and dealing with pelvic floor tension at the same time?

On today’s episode of @bendy_bodies, I’m joined by Dr. Brooke Winder (@drbrookewinderpt) to break down this paradox in hypermobility and pelvic floor dysfunction.

In conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders, ligaments (which provide joint stability) are more lax—so the body often compensates.

That compensation? Your muscles.

Pelvic floor muscles may become overactive, fatigued, or hold more tension to try to stabilize what the ligaments can’t.

Which means you can feel “tight” and “weak” at the same time.

This is why pelvic floor dysfunction in hypermobility isn’t just about strength—it’s about understanding how your body is compensating.

These conversations matter because so many hypermobile patients are told conflicting things—and left without clear answers.

💬 Question for you: Have you experienced both muscle tightness and weakness at the same time?

I’m so excited to share this clip of a recent chat I had with Dr. Brooke Winder @drbrookewinderpt where she breaks down her background, her work in hypermobility and pelvic floor health, and why circus artists need to be in this conversation.

After you watch this clip, go watch the full interview on YouTube. Then sign up for her hour-long talk with Dr. Lina Blustein “Hypermobility MD” at the Circus Science Symposium — or grab a ticket to all 6 sessions while you're at it. All links in b!o or comment “ beyond “ and I’ll send you the interview and ticket link!
