POSTS STORIES REELS

@drchanelledennis discusses the taboo around Mental Health and asking for help. Listen back with @remiburgz on BBC Sounds by @drchanelledennis

Yesterday I spoke to ITV about some of the experiences’ black women are having during the perinatal period and why this may be happening. I actually missed it myself 😅

If you’ve been watching my stories you would’ve been able to see some tagged clips. But here’s the full video 😁

(For clarification, yes I’m a Psychotherapist. But my research has been conducted in my role as a Trainee Clinical Psychologist)

1Xtra Future Figures is back 💫

This November, we’re taking a moment to celebrate, champion and uplift those who have made an impact within our community.

Today, we champion @themelaninmoods for providing a culturally sensitive approach to communities who have not always accessed traditional mental health services ❤️

The third Wednesday of the month is coming up and you know what that means... Barbershop Chronicles is back!

This month we are covering two different themes.
At @sevenstarbarbers we’ll be discussing a health issue that disproportionately affects black men, prostate health and we have a guest facilitator coming along to help us with that convo.

At Alphas Barbers we’ll be discussing attachments, which is the foundation on how we connect, relate and love!
But don’t worry if you have a preference in location, next month we’ll be doing it all again but swapping the topics around so all men get an opportunity to join the conversation.

Black men, we got food, we got drinks, come along and join the space we have created just for you.
Same date: 21/10/26
Same time: 7pm
Two locations and two themes. Link in bio, register today! by @drchanelledennis

Last Sunday we had Convo’s & Cocktails where we discussed ‘The Psychology of Road’. It was such a deep conversation discussing the impact and consequences of this lifestyle. It was also eye opening that the topic seemingly removed from some people, actually connected much more than anticipated.

Unfortunately the conversation was so rich, we ran out of time and we didn’t get to discuss everything on the agenda! So, if you think we should do a part II let us know!!

We want to say a special thank you to our hosts

Our team @_talitha.jadex @totalifit_therapy @drchanelledennis and everyone else who helped on the night! Including our door lady Yvonne and our canapé chef who always goes above and beyond @dawnarichards and, @djgzeeofficial as always on decks.

Special thank you to @acapellabirmingham who kept the cocktails flowing! And for the amazing service you always offer.

And last but not least, special thank you to YOU the community for coming out and engaging in conversations with us! 🫶🏾

Stay tuned for more highlights of the night coming soon! 🎉

Crown Talks X Journal To Dreams 💛

Last week we had the pleasure of collaborating with the lovely ladies from @journaltodreams to deliver a powerful crown talks session all about addictions. There were many powerful conversations had, laughter shared and as always, we all left with more knowledge than we came with.

Thank you to our community of amazing ladies for continuing to show up for themselves- you are appreciated 💛

My last post I said I was going to take the rest of the week for some R&R.

Phone on DND, rest, write, read, pray, swim, snooze and then repeat. This is what it looked like….

Rested.

September, let’s go 🫶🏾

Soul Food, truly was food for my soul. I’ve had an incredible 5 months running this programme with the team @themelaninmoods and so proud that the feedback leaves us no choice but to make it another one of our staple programmes 🫶🏾

Recently, we’ve been running three programmes (Beyond The Fade, Barbershop Chronicles and Soul Food) simtaneously whilst planning for our other programmes Crown Talks and Convo’s & Cocktails 😮‍💨

Anddddd I’ve still been holding down my NHS role and my position as a trustee too. Cue slide 5 😂

This work is fulfilling, it fuels me but I am also very aware it requires my energy too. So with that being said, I’m looking forward to the rest of this week off from EVERYTHING so that I can refill my own cup 🙌🏾🫶🏾

Soul Food finale 🎉

Over 5 months, we have held 5 sessions of soul food. On Friday it was the last session and boy are we sad to see the end! We had 8 individuals attend the whole programme and 4 - 5 new faces join us each month! Not to forget the additional family and friends that joined us for family style dining each evening, after we had made our meals.

We had an incredible time with you all, thank you for being a part of the first ever SoulFood!

Thank you to our amazing chefs that taught the classes:
@denniscaribbeanstreetfood_ / @jamiousdennis2 and @shanimesquitta

And to all the incredible staff at @xceleratewithedgbaston who helped with the running of the kitchen and ensured that not one of us, ever had a pot to wash 🙌🏾

Don’t worry community, we heard you loud and clear… we will be back! 😉

For now, take a look at what the final session looked like 😋

This evening, I was at the session finale of our Soul Food programme, completely oblivious to the shocking and heartbreaking news of Professor Jason Arday.

I never met him, but his story has felt personal to me. Professor Jason Arday was a Black man who didn’t speak until he was 11, didn’t learn to read or write until 18, but despite that, went on to become one of the youngest Black professors in the history of Cambridge.

As a Black psychologist who has also completed a doctoral thesis, I know what that level of work demands and the deep anguish he must have felt to have his work and his integrity questioned.

I knew who he was prior to the onslaught of negativity in the media. But I’ll be transparent, the backlash had me following even more closely, trying to understand WHY? I felt deep empathy for his situation and anger that this was his experience which continued... and continued….and continued. There was only one reason I could come up with. Racism.

Being a Black woman, I know what it is to have your presence in these spaces quietly questioned simply because of what you look like. Jason carried a public version of that weight, and I felt it for him every time I saw it play out and it leaves me questioning, would this have happened if he was not a Black man?

His death has shocked me, and left me feeling disappointed. It’s not just grieving, but frustration at how much scrutiny and doubt he had to carry. I don’t know what led to this moment, and I won’t pretend to. But I do know that the toll of constantly having your legitimacy questioned is real.

To his family, friends, students, and colleagues there are no words. Just know that I’m holding you in my thoughts and I am so, so sorry for your loss 🤍

We don’t know about you but we are still reflecting back to last week Wednesday where we had our Beyond The Fade (BTF) premiere at Odeon!!

Black barbers have and continue to be known as ‘community therapist’, seeing some of their insights and experiences through Phase 1 of BTF on the big screen was something special.

They do so much for our communities and this recognition was necessary. Following on from this the BTF peer support network will be launching very soon. If you are a Black barber, or you know a Black barber please get them to register their interests at the link in our bio! 😁

For now, if you were not there, well we can’t lie…you did miss out! But not to worry, we had @lenz_visuals capturing the moment. Check it out 🎉
