Why did @mcuban want to disrupt healthcare - an industry that many shy away from because it’s too difficult?

This year, I had the unexpected privilege of being a producer on @alltheemptyrooms - a documentary honored with an Academy Award. As a surgeon, I never imagined being part of a film recognized this way— but what stays with me most is not the award itself, it is the people whose stories made the film possible

Today, on Gun Violence Awareness Day, as thousands of @northwellhealth team members wear orange, I’m reminded that this work is about people, families, and communities impacted by gun violence.

My deepest gratitude to the Blackwell, Muehlberger, Cazares, and Scruggs families for trusting us with your stories, and to @jrseftel , @stevehartmancbs , Avi Bond, @smartypantspictures , @netflix , and everyone who helped bring this film to life.

Thank you to my colleagues, mentors, friends, and family for your support. Any impact this work has had is because of the incredible people I have the privilege of working alongside every day. And shout out to the incredible @northwellcgvp and Northwell leadership for all their efforts to support this work.

My hope is that this recognition continues to shine a light on lives forever changed by gun violence and inspires all of us to keep showing up—with empathy, humility, and a commitment to making a difference.

Today, seeing thousands of Northwell employees wearing orange, I am reminded that this work belongs to all of us. @theacademy by @drchethansathya

I had an incredible conversation with Anne Stake from Anthropic @claudeai at @northwellhealth Constellation Forum, where we challenged some big assumptions about AI and the future of women’s health.

Women’s health has been overlooked, underfunded, and understudied for far too long. Can AI finally change that? Or will we just automate the same inequities?

For decades, women have been underrepresented in research, their symptoms dismissed, and their health needs treated as an afterthought.

Now we’re entering an era where AI could help us rewrite that story.

But here’s the challenge: If we build AI on a healthcare system that has historically underserved women, why should we expect different outcomes?

Anne brought tremendous insight and optimism to a conversation that went well beyond the technology itself. We explored bias, access, trust, and what it will actually take to turn AI’s promise into meaningful improvements in women’s lives.

As a physician and a father of daughters, this conversation felt particularly important.

AI could be the greatest equalizer in healthcare—or it could reinforce the very disparities we’re trying to eliminate. The choices we make now will determine which.

Huge thanks to Anne, Anthropic, and the Northwell team for an energizing discussion at an incredible forum.

Honored to be a producer on the incredible Oscar winning film @alltheemptyrooms - We had a wonderful conversation at @wbur @wburcityspace about this film and its profound message on our gun violence public health crisis. Grateful to speak alongside Director and Producer @jrseftel @stevehartmancbs and the incredible Nancy Blackwell, mom to beautiful Dominic Blackwell.

We’ve grown numb to mass shootings in this country. Being part of this film has been a privilege. It takes us inside the empty bedrooms of children lost to gun violence, spaces frozen in time. I’ve seen it resonate with people across the country, from Texas to New York, because we all recognize those rooms. The families who opened their homes and their grief are extraordinary. Their courage reminds us what truly matters.

And that caps an incredible week meeting public and global health leaders at #unga @clintonglobal @drtedros @gavinnewsom - and hearing from folks who are truly changing the world. The future is bright. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “it’s better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness”. Onward! by @drchethansathya

Really enjoyed the opportunity to talk healthcare and public health with @cagovernor @gavinnewsom

We got into the substance: what’s working, what isn’t, the pros and cons of different policy approaches, and what he would change if given the opportunity to rethink parts of the American healthcare system.

California has been an interesting laboratory. Under Governor Newsom, the state expanded Medi-Cal coverage, launched CalAIM to better integrate medical care with behavioral health and social needs, created the Office of Health Care Affordability with statewide healthcare spending growth targets, and took a more direct approach to prescription drug costs through CalRx, including state-contracted insulin.

Not every policy is perfect, and reasonable people can disagree about the right role of government. That was part of what made the conversation interesting, discussing not just the aspirations behind policy, but the tradeoffs, implementation challenges, costs, and unintended consequences.

That feels particularly important right now. With major federal Medicaid changes under H.R. 1 approaching in 2027, including work/community engagement requirements for certain adults and more frequent eligibility redeterminations for the Medicaid expansion population, health systems, states, community organizations and technology partners will have to think differently about how we keep eligible people connected to care while also making healthcare more affordable and sustainable.

We need more conversations about healthcare that move beyond political talking points and focus on a harder question: what actually works?

Grateful to Governor Newsom for the thoughtful discussion. by @drchethansathya

Tune in to episodes 3 & 5 — Gun violence is front and center in this @netflix docuseries — where we give folks a chance to see us treat and operate on two kids injured by guns. It’s heartbreaking, and if you have any “doubts” about the trauma bullets cause, watch. @yularifilms @northwellhealth by @drchethansathya

A clip from one of my favorite podcast episodes with @chelseaclinton - discussing topics that feel even more relevant in today’s charged landscape. We had the chance to sit down for a wide-ranging conversation about raising kids, how parenthood changes our perspective, and what real leadership in public health could look like.

We talked about trust, listening to people who may see things differently, and how we can bring people together rather than push them further apart. At a time when so many conversations about health and public health can quickly become divisive, those lessons feel just as relevant today.

Good public health leadership isn’t only about having the right answers. It’s about listening, building trust, being willing to have hard conversations, and finding common ground around something we all share: wanting healthier futures for our families and communities. @northwellhealth by @drchethansathya

If you haven’t already seen #emergencynyc @netflix - check it out. Episodes 3 and 5 feature us treating kids with gun shot wounds - and the rest of the series highlights the incredible efforts of frontline workers across @northwellhealth by @drchethansathya

It's not every day a physician gets to use their expertise to consult on an Oscar-nominated documentary. @Northwellhealth's @drchethansathya explains how his work in gun violence treatment and prevention led him to be a consulting physician on @Netflix's "@alltheemptyrooms." No matter the outcome of the Oscars this Sunday, Dr. Sathya is already a winner in our minds. #Oscars2026 #gunviolenceprevention #NoMoreEmptyRooms by @drchethansathya

Thank you @potus @vp @whitehouseogvp46 for prioritizing gun violence prevention and saving lives - and thank you to all on both sides of the aisle who have been a big part of this journey. I’m hopeful that fewer kids will need trauma surgeons because of your direct efforts. by @drchethansathya

Had the chance to sit down with Mark Cuban @mcuban for a candid conversation on the future of healthcare, AI, entrepreneurship, and why he believes healthcare may be one of the most “disruptable” industries in America.

What struck me most wasn’t just the conversation around technology or business models, but his relentless focus on transparency, incentives, and simplicity. From the creation of Cost Plus Drugs to his push for direct contracting and AI-enabled healthcare workflows, Mark’s perspective is that many of healthcare’s biggest problems are not due to a lack of innovation, but because the system has become unnecessarily complex.

We talked about:

• Why price transparency matters
• How AI could reshape clinical decision-making and reduce misinformation
• Medicare Advantage, PBMs, and administrative waste
• Entrepreneurship, curiosity, and the “power of broke” mentality
• Why healthcare systems need to think differently about access, incentives, and scalability

Whether you agree with every idea or not, these are exactly the kinds of conversations healthcare needs more of right now — honest, nuanced, cross-disciplinary discussions that challenge entrenched assumptions and push us to rethink how we deliver care.

Appreciate Mark for taking the time to engage deeply on these issues. @northwellhealth
