In the Circulation 2018 trial by Dr. Benjamin Levine, sedentary adults in their 50s followed a specific training structure—and their hearts literally became more elastic, less stiff, and more efficient… reversing decades of aging.

Today’s carousel breaks down what they did, how it changed the heart, and how you can adapt this protocol for your own longevity.

🫀 The secret?
A weekly blend of:
• High-intensity intervals (Norwegian 4×4)
• Moderate cardio
• Strength training
• Impact loading (like jump rope)
• And consistency over time.

No expensive equipment.
No gym membership required.
Just science-based training that rebuilds your heart and strengthens your bones.

If you want my full Heart + Bone Longevity Plan (adapted from the study and optimized for women 40+):

✨ Comment “HEART” and I’ll send you more details.

Your heart age is not fixed.
You can train it younger.

5 nutrients most people are deficient
in without ever knowing it.

And why standard blood tests often
miss them completely.

As a clinical and research pharmacist
I’ve seen this pattern repeatedly —
people doing everything right and
still feeling wrong.

Here’s what I look for:

1️⃣ MAGNESIUM
Up to 50% of Americans are deficient.
Rarely tested in standard labs.
Affects sleep, anxiety, muscle function,
blood sugar, and heart rhythm.
Most supplements use the wrong form.

2️⃣ VITAMIN D
Your doctor tests this one —
but the “normal” range is heavily debated.
Optimal for disease prevention is very
different from just avoiding deficiency.
Most people need more than they’re getting.

3️⃣ VITAMIN B12
Critical for nerve function, energy,
and mental clarity.
If you take metformin, a PPI, or eat
mostly plant-based — you are almost
certainly depleted.
Most people have no idea.

4️⃣ OMEGA 3 / DHA
The majority of Americans are chronically
low in DHA specifically.
Linked to brain fog, depression,
inflammation, and cardiovascular risk.
Your fish oil supplement may not be
delivering what you think it is.

5️⃣ ZINC
Essential for immune function, hormone
balance, wound healing, and gut lining
integrity.
Depleted by stress, alcohol, and several
common medications.
Almost never tested unless you ask.

The problem isn’t that people don’t care
about their health.

The problem is that nobody with a
clinical background has ever looked
at the full picture with them.

That’s exactly what I do.

💊 Save this post — share it with
someone who is always tired, foggy,
or just not feeling their best despite
doing everything right.

If your hair is falling out and your labs came back “fine,” read this.

On September 16, 2026, the American Society of Hematology raised the ferritin thresholds for diagnosing iron deficiency. Under the new guidelines, 30 or below counts for most adults. 50 or below if you have heavy periods. The result that was called normal last year may not be anymore.

Here is what gets missed: your hemoglobin can be perfectly normal while your iron stores are empty. That is most of the cases. Nobody runs the ferritin.

Ask for ferritin, a CBC, an iron panel with transferrin saturation, and a CRP so you know whether that ferritin can be trusted.

And if you are already taking iron, how you take it matters more than what you bought. Every other day, in the morning, with vitamin C, and two hours away from your coffee.

Comment FERRITIN and I will send you the free two-page guide with the new cutoffs, what to ask for, and how to take iron so it actually absorbs.

Educational content only. Not medical advice. Lab interpretation belongs with your own clinician, who knows your history.

A standard panel is built to answer one question: do you have a disease yet?

That's screening. It's designed to catch what's already established, not to explain why you're exhausted at 2pm.

These five ask a different question: what is your body currently doing to hold everything together?

Ferritin — your iron savings account. It empties first, long before hemoglobin drops. You can be iron deficient with a perfectly normal CBC.

Full thyroid panel (free T3, free T4, TPO antibodies) — TSH tells you what your brain is signaling, not what's reaching your cells. Antibodies can flag Hashimoto's years early. B12 with MMA — B12 can read normal while your cells are running low. MMA rises when cells don’t have usable B12, so it catches what the blood level misses. Especially relevant on metformin or a daily acid reducer.

Fasting insulin — glucose and A1c stay normal for years while insulin climbs to keep them there. Insulin is the earlier signal.

Same pattern every time. The standard test measures the number your body protects hardest. These five measure the effort it’s spending to protect it.

Normal is a range, not an answer.

Comment LABS and I’ll send you the printable one-pager to bring to your next appointment. Free, and I send every one myself.

Educational content only. It does not replace advice from your own prescriber.

Vitamin D, 25-OH — rarely on a routine panel. Deficiency is common even in Florida, and low D shows up as fatigue, low mood, aches, and poor calcium absorption.

B12 with MMA — B12 can read normal while your cells are running low. MMA rises when cells don’t have usable B12, so it catches what the blood level misses. Especially relevant on certain diabetic medications or a daily acid reducer.

Some weeks the plan goes perfectly. Most weeks it does not.

Miss two workouts, skip the protein, sleep badly, and something in your head says you may as well stop entirely.

That is the moment that actually decides your outcome. Not the good week. The one where you feel terrible and do one small thing anyway.

Eat the protein. Take the ten-minute walk. Go to bed on time. Not because it will fix how you feel today, but because the woman you are building does not need you at your best. She needs you consistent. Feeling good is not the goal. Not abandoning the plan when you feel bad is.

Researchers took healthy young women and used a medication to temporarily switch their estrogen off. Verbal memory dropped. That word-finding, tip-of-the-tongue feeling.

Then they gave estrogen back to half of them and a placebo to the other half. Only the estrogen group recovered.

No study has tracked brain fog in perimenopause directly. But this helps explain why it happens, and why it tracks with your hormones shifting, not with your intelligence.

There is a second route too. Night sweats break your sleep, and broken sleep alone will fog anyone’s thinking. Treat the sweats and the fog often lifts with them.

One honest note. This is about brain fog now, not dementia prevention. Those are two different questions with two different answers.

Your brain is not broken.

Say the words “brain fog” out loud at your next appointment. Dr. Colleen, PharmD

Your hormone test came back normal. You still feel awful. You are not imagining it.

In perimenopause, estrogen does not slide quietly downward. It swings.

In the SWAN study, only about 27 percent of women followed a steady decline. Nearly a third had estrogen rise before it fell.

So a single blood draw catches one moment on a moving line. Draw it on a different day and you get a different answer.

This is why every major guideline says the same thing: treat symptoms, not levels. There is no estradiol number that decides this for you.

A normal estrogen level does not mean nothing is happening. It means the number was caught at a calm moment.

Going to your appointment? Bring your symptoms, not just your labs.

Nobody warned me alcohol would stop being free.

In my twenties a few drinks cost me nothing. Now one glass buys a 3am wake-up, a hot flash, and a Tuesday spent wading through wet sand.

That is physiology, not weakness. Alcohol fragments sleep and suppresses REM, which is exactly what perimenopause is already doing to you.

Not telling you to quit. Just space them out and watch what your sleep does.

Step two is vitamin D itself. Its main job is increasing how much calcium you absorb from food. But absorbing calcium is not the same as putting it in the right place.

Step three is K2. It activates the two proteins that sort calcium, sending it into your bones and helping keep it out of your arteries. Without K2, those proteins sit there switched off.

Now the honest part. All of that biology is well established. What is NOT proven is that adding K2 to your vitamin D prevents heart disease in healthy people. Most of those trials are small, short, and done in kidney patients.

So where do you start? Fix magnesium first. It has the clearest job and the most common shortfall.

And if you take warfarin, vitamin K interacts with it directly. Ask before you add K2.

Comment TRIO and I will send you what to look for on a label.
