Cronenberg meets claymation in @drdfoothead new music video for @alphabetheads Misanthrope! Made with support from @nzonairmusic watch as this undulating subject is fed aural and visual stimulation and marvel at its mutation / evolution in real-time! Link in bio for the full video.

“I fell in love with Dr D Foothead’s drawing in 2012 when I was given one of his beautiful art zines. I’m fond of the organic and ‘stream-of-consciousness’ nature of his work and composition and colour choices just tickle my brain. My crush has only intensified over the years seeing his incredible animated video work with acts like @kinggizzard, @seesohthee & @kamandimusic !”

The sci fi basis for the Misanthrope made a perfect pairing with Dr D Foothead, a New Zealand animator known for his mesmerising imagery defined by hypnotic detail, hyper saturated colour and dynamic, flowing form.

“I love synthesising short ‘non-musical’ noises!” says Alphabethead. “I’ve made hundreds and this family of curiosities I call ‘computer interface sounds’. The sci-fi sounds you’d hear on the bridge of the USS Enterprise or aboad the Nostromo! My intent was to create a bold but minimal backing beat that I could populate with all my favourite blips and bloops. Misanthrope was informed by my love of ‘sci-fi textures’ starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation! And, even prior to this video, David Croneburg’s biomechanical, new flesh aesthetic was a major influence. The Fly and Existenz left an indelible mark on teenage Alphie and imagery from those films ripples through my mind weekly!”

“The initial seed I sent to Foothead was just ‘an inhospitable world where the electronic blips and bloops represent life finding a way’. The other direction was that those long synth moments are the peaks of the song and ‘cataclysmic events’ that accelerate the mutation of any creature/blob/organism on screen. Foothead and I would refer to these as ‘beaming rays of radiation.’”

Unbelievably stoked an Alphabethead X Foothead collab I’ve fantasized about for a decade has come to pass!📼I’ve watched this video an inordinate amount of times in the lounge, lights off, bopping along on the big screen. The whole Cronenberg meets claymation aesthetic is sooo appealing to me!🤩

The initial seed I sent to Foothead was - an inhospitable world where the electronic blips and bloops in the song represent life finding a way. And, that those extended, dissonant synth moments (1:23 & 1:57) are the peaks of the song, ‘cataclysmic events’ that accelerate the mutation of any creature/blob/organism on screen. Foothead and I would refer to these as ‘beaming rays of radiation’ and he absolutely crushed that aspect of the vid!!!👾

On this day in 2016, Wellington craft brewery @parrotdogbeer launched a crowdfunding campaign that made New Zealand history 🍻

What began in 2011 as two Matts brewing beer in an Aro Valley flat had grown into one of Wellington’s most recognisable craft breweries. But by 2016, demand had outgrown the brewery’s capacity.

Faced with a choice between bringing in a major investor or raising funds from the people who drank their beer, Parrotdog turned to the crowd.

The response was extraordinary.

Within just 48 hours, the brewery raised $2 million through a PledgeMe campaign, making it one of the most successful crowdfunding raises New Zealand had ever seen. Hundreds of supporters got behind the campaign, helping fund the next chapter of Parrotdog’s story.

The investment allowed the team to build their Lyall Bay brewery, laying the foundations for the business many Wellingtonians know today.

More than a brewery success story, the campaign reflected the strength of Wellington’s food and drink culture, where locals were willing to back the businesses helping shape the city’s identity.

Featured in this video is the cardboard maquette created by Wellington artist @drdfoothead foothead for Parrotdog’s 2016 fundraising campaign. Used to help visualise the brewery’s future home in Lyall Bay, it is now on display in Capital of Kai.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of that remarkable fundraising campaign, and comes just days after Parrotdog celebrated 15 years since those first home brews in an Aro Valley flat.

Reflecting on the double poutama show at @northartnz with @drdfoothead and our art station drawing workshop with the public. Big ups to Kirsten for all her work organising, curating and setting up the workshop. Felt so good to sit and draw with randoms and chat about life. We wanted to get in on some of that action, but in 13 years we haven’t had the guts to do it alone. Too much imposter syndrome 🙃

So when we met Jamie from #hutbaggernz (@fleetfm883 ) we knew the time had come!

Finally a cause worthy of a Tshirt! A website we use all the time, in our hut art mahi, who is launching their first fundraising shop!

Thanks to Daniel’s killer illustration skills @drdfoothead we’ve got an epic design that can be gazed upon endlessly and still hold your attention 🤩
