Dr. Diane Hoffoss is living proof that mathematics can be hands-on.

The USD mathematics (@usdmath) professor has spent her years exploring topology’s abstract realm. But after a transformative trip to Burning Man in 2016, she started down a new path.

She began crafting mesmerizing art installations with ArtBuilds (@art_builds) that brought mathematical concepts to life. The very first of those creations was a towering 12-foot dodecahedron called “Unfolding Humanity.”

Now as a director of the San Diego CoLab (@sdcolab), Dr. Hoffoss is showing others that anyone — with a little creativity and elbow grease — can turn mathematics into a beautiful, hands-on experience.

Here's how art finds its people.

Recorded in Black Rock City

Dr Diane Hoffoss and Andie Grace decode the depth between interactive art, interactive math, and the universe.

They share about art collectives, and Burning Man Regionals... and how Diane's university funded her Burning Man art as scholarly research.

See how building a laser playground in the dust might just restore faith in humanity.

So much gratitude to these three resourceful, supportive, devoted, joyful humans, who saved the day when we found Axion Seed dark in a nighttime whiteout! Two fought their way to camp and back to figure out an emergency power solution while a third stayed with me to keep the area lit with our bikes and troubleshoot the problem. On our epic push back to camp after we got it lit again, I was overwhelmed with gratitude and felt so supported by my community. Love you Clint, Stephen, and Vic!!! ❤️❤️❤️ by @drdianeomite

Axion Seed adopted its mood from the atmosphere: thick bold beams, thin crisscrossing lattices, sparkling pathways. I loved them all 💚 #axionseed #burningman2026 by @drdianeomite
